Answers

Poe was a pioneer in real criticism when our country's literature was being born. Honesty, high standards, and his own aesthetics as a poet were combined with entertaining fierceness and satire. How he relates to the modern developments is a long line of tradition to follow. T.S. Eliot is another poet critic(also criticized Poe who criticized some of his ancestors)working from similar principles, though a colder more experienced aesthetic. I think the original debate of art for art's sake that Poe began is still going on. This question needs a lot more than I can give right now.
