This thread is for documenting our experiences with the AvantGo mBusiness server.

We installed the server on Friday, 2001-06-22. The install was fairly smooth and uneventful. The only issue was the fact that the AvantGo software requires communication over the http protocol to srp.blackberry.net over port 3101. This is the same connection information that the BlackBerry Enterprise Server uses. To fix this, I have the AvantGo server a permanent IP address (164.224.238.213) and called Tom McGraw (firewall guy) and Gary Wyckoff (AAUSN policy). They agreed to allow this connection through the firewall for the duration of the pilot.

The underlying technology is the Apache web server and MySQL.

Installing AvantGo Clients on Blackberry PDA's

Before starting, insure that Blackberry client (version 2.1 or later) has already been installed on the user's workstation. If this is a new installation, you will need to install the Blackberry client software before installing AvantGo client.

* Login as local administrator

-- Add user to local Administrators group

* Login as user

* Launch MS Internet Explorer

-- Http://AvantGo:8091 -- Login as "ADMIN" (Contact DONCIO Leading Edge Team for password) -- Goto "Users" tab; select "New User"; and create account for user -- "Comment: DONCIO Blackberry User" -- Select "Logout"; "Yes"; and "OK"

* Select "Download Client Software Only"

-- Select "AvantGo for RIM Wireless Handheld Instructions" -- Select "1. Download 'AvantGo Client Software'" -- Select "Save this program to disk" (save file to C:\)

* Launch C:\AGRIMClientEnterprise.exe

-- "Next" -- "Yes" -- Accept the default destination location -- "Finish"

* Set ACLs for users (local), on C:\Program Files\Avantgo to MODIFY

* Launch "Application Loader" in Blackberry Desktop Manager

-- "Next" -- Select all applications desired for install on handheld (including AvantGo) -- "Next" -- "Increase the amount of space..." -- Select "Erase existing data..." and "Erase existing handheld apps" -- "Next" -- "Finish"

* Launch "AvantGo" in Blackberry Desktop Manager

-- Select "Sync automatically when device is placed in cradle" -- "Server Settings

--- "Add" --- "Hostname: AVANTGO" --- "Port: 8092" --- "Username: (USER'S LOGIN NAME) --- "Set password" (have user enter their AvantGo password) --- Select "Connect to this server during device synchronization" --- DESelect "Refresh all content at next sync" --- "OK" --- Now leave the "AvantGo Settings" window open; you will need to come back to it after the next few steps.

* Launch \\ciodc0\music\ThawteTestServerRoot4Client

-- Select "Install Certificate" -- "Next" -- "Next" -- "Finish" -- "Yes" -- "OK" -- "OK" (to close the "Certificate" window) -- Now return to the "AvantGo Settings" window you left open

* Erase C:\AGRIMClientEnterprise.exe
