Hazardous Materials Crews On The Way To Scene

OKLAHOMA CITY, 5:11 p.m. CDT June 26, 2001 -- Hazardous materials crews are on the scene of a train derailment in northwest Oklahoma City Tuesday.

The derailment near the Wilshire and Classen intersection is causing travel problems in the area, just as the evening commute is getting under way, Eyewitness News 5 reported.

The derailment sparked several small grassfires that are burning in the area.

Motorists are being encouraged to avoid the area.

Reports are that the train had hazardous materials on board, and that there may be some leaks.

Good News... no leaks of the hazardous material. 16 of the 57 cars are over on their side. No idea yet as to what caused the derailment. The site is about to be turned over to Burlington- Northern-Santa Fe (whose train it was).
