A very brief course in some basic HTML

I also created an HTML category and moved this thread into it.

-- Anonymous, June 26, 2001

Jim, did you cut and paste??? This doesn't look like what was on Joy's thread.

-- Anonymous, June 26, 2001

ACK! Thanks for noticing this, diane. I did cut and paste and I ended up botching it. I'll have to go in and fix it...

-- Anonymous, June 26, 2001

There... I fixed it.

-- Anonymous, June 26, 2001

What did you do in the first line of each example so it stayed displayed as the code rather than just showing up as the finished result?

-- Anonymous, June 26, 2001

Trying to regain that gold star!

-- Anonymous, June 26, 2001

It worked! This is so cool! I went over to Webmonkey and worked through a couple of their children's lessons on HTML.

THIS IS FUN! Wheeeeeeeeee!

-- Anonymous, June 26, 2001

JIM BOB! Put that there chicken down! You've done allready had yer supper!

-- Anonymous, June 26, 2001

What did you do in the first line of each example so it stayed displayed as the code rather than just showing up as the finished result?

I used a text and HTML editor to convert the HTML code into ascii code. That way the browser doesn't read it as HTML.

The text editor is called NoteTab Light (freeware)

-- Anonymous, June 26, 2001

BTW Sherri, good job. Looks like you get to keep your gold star after all...

Joy: I really like those animated smiley faces. I tried following the URL for the Gif you posted but couldn't find where you got them from. I would love to have them available for us to use on our forum.

Cindy: That character bears no resemblance to me what so ever! :o)

-- Anonymous, June 26, 2001

Cindy, WOWWWW! I love Jimbob. That is great. Where can I find pictures to transfer? Can I use the moving clipart I have on file?

-- Anonymous, June 26, 2001

BEYOND THE SIDEWALKS ROCKS!!

-- Anonymous, June 26, 2001

I have a lot of them on my site. I am linking to my site.

Solid Rock Ranch

I get them from the Animation Factory.

Whoa Earthmama! You've changed the text for the whole page!

-- Anonymous, June 26, 2001

This is so cool! When you guys are done playing I'm gonna print the whole thread!

BTW, I your'e interested there's a whole bunch of emoticons on WWW.OMSAKTHI.ORG at the discussion board.

-- Anonymous, June 26, 2001

Did you see that! The whole page was moving. I put it back. I was trying to fix it. I was getting dizzy!

-- Anonymous, June 26, 2001

You guys are really showing off ya know!!!:-) Guess I'd better get going and check out what my webtv is capable of. I have so many sites stored for the time I get ambitious enough to do some of that "fancy" stuff. Guess I'd better check them out!

-- Anonymous, June 26, 2001

Um........I have more power than I imagined! (But have no idea why?) heh heh

-- Anonymous, June 26, 2001

Well, I tried to fix it but I don't know how. Nothing I put in there worked. What is it Jim?

-- Anonymous, June 26, 2001

Back to reality?

Jim, I "borrowed" that smilie from another board I'm active on. Our administrator got them somewhere and saved them for us. I can ask her for the site where she got them, if you'd like. I don't think I ought to be linking to her saved smilies too often -- doesn't that use up too much of her bandwidth or something?

-- Anonymous, June 26, 2001

OK, I think I've fixed it. I needed to move some of earthmama's HTML around and re-word it to get it to work right.

I think you know just enough HTML to be dangerous, earthmama! :-)

-- Anonymous, June 26, 2001

I'm gonna go see what you did Jim. I put < / font > (spaced right) where it was supposed to end. But it made all the posts from her's down scroll. There were 2 marquees in there. Blockquote didn't work either. I tried looking at VIEW, SOURCE, and that didn't tell me much either. So I put it back the way she had it. Ya know, I use Publisher 97 and 2000, I don't HAVE to know much HTML! But I am learning! Whoa what a night.

-- Anonymous, June 27, 2001

Joy: A person was kind enough to send me an email link of quite a few animated emoticons. I just need to find out if we can link to them for our own use. And yes, linking to them does draw on the bandwith of the server where the emoticons reside (so we're in effect stealing their bandwith).

I wish we could find some online storage for free so we could upload these animated gifs and then link to them for use on our forum. I've got plenty of storage space on Brinkster's server (where the BTS portal resides) but they prevent you from linking to images in order to prevent that bandwith problem you mentioned.

I'll need to look into this a little more but it may take me a while to find a solution...

-- Anonymous, June 27, 2001

Cindy: I should have saved the original layout of earthmama's code last night so we could have made a comparison to my changes to it. But it was late last night when I made the changes so didn't really think about doing that. I'll try to remember to do so in the future if something like this occurs again. I think it would be a great learning experience to see the differences in her code and how I eventually "fixed" it to get it to work right...

-- Anonymous, June 27, 2001

Oh I do enjoy causing trouble! And I'm very dangerous, be sure to remember that....

I remember my code, Jim, do you want me to send it to you in an email? I still dont get why it did that; it should have worked!

-- Anonymous, June 27, 2001

Okay, I am going to use the brackets [ ] for my illustrations, instead of the arrows.

Isn't it something about embedding the commands within commands?

For instance, TEXT PRINTED HERE
rather than TEXT PRINTED HERE

Maybe another way of saying it would be that the first command issued is the last to be ended? Or am I totally off the track on this?

-- Anonymous, June 27, 2001

OK Jimmy, fix your boo-boo. I think that the graphic you linked to is on a password-protected site. I keep getting a pop-up box asking for my ID and password when I click on this thread.

-- Anonymous, June 27, 2001

Shoot! I thought I had found a free storage sight to put a few smiley face gifs so we could link to them but I guess it doesn't work.

I'll have to give this some more thought...

If you want to have the HTML without the work, and you're a Netscape user, open up Netscape composer. That's the little paper and pen icon all the way on the right, or from the menu its COMMUNICATOR - COMPOSER. Or CTL-4 In the composer window, Type Start, hit return. Type in all the stuff you want and use the Netscape LINKS tool to make any links you want (you do this by typing the text you want, highlighting it, then clicking on the LINKS button on the toolbar and assigning an URL to it). You can also set fonts and bold and italics and all that right there on the toolbar. When you're all done, hit return. Type END. Save the file. Now go to EDIT - HTML SOURCE A text editor will pop up with all sorts of arcane HTML stuff in it. Don't worry about all that junk, you typed START and END so you know where the parts are that you want. Highlight everything in between START and END, then do EDIT - COPY or just hit CTL-C Go to the text box for the message you want to post, click in it once, and hit CTL-V There you go. I finally decided to do it this way because once you type in ANY HTML you have to treat the entire message as HTML - e.g., all your paragraph formatting has to be done with
and

or all your lines run together. Besides, I quit my programming job 3 years ago and swore I'd never write another line of code. Y'all don't want me to break my vow, now, do you? LOL!

-- Anonymous, June 27, 2001

Well, I forgot that trying to type the HTML for line and paragraph breaks would put the whole message into HTML and mess up my formatting, just like I was trying to avoid.

LOL!

-- Anonymous, June 28, 2001

green is for gardening, blue is for sky..............:>)

-- Anonymous, June 28, 2001

Here is my house. I'm sitting in there right now, do you see me? he he he

-- Anonymous, June 28, 2001

Cindy: Cool picture. Did you use a panoramic camera to take the picture or is it cropped from a larger photo?

Earthmama:

I remember my code, Jim, do you want me to send it to you in an email? I still dont get why it did that; it should have worked!

Did you get my email, E.M.? I sent one to you on the 27th of this month to your yahoo account. I'm still interested in getting a copy of your code. You can send it at your earliest convenience.

-- Anonymous, June 29, 2001

I cropped and buttonized it with Paint Shop Pro. I loooove to do pictures and graphics. Good morning boss.

-- Anonymous, June 29, 2001

Dumb question. How do get those little animated graphics from the animation website into an e-mail?

-- Anonymous, June 29, 2001

Cindy, please stop posting pictures of your farm, you're endangering my sanity! I now have a devil sitting on one shoulder whispering "You should move to Kentucky. The land is beautiful and land prices are much cheaper than Indiana". And then there is the angel on the other shoulder whispering "But you'd be so far away from your friends and family." Or is it the angel telling me to move and the devil telling me to stay? It's getting kind of hard to tell.

You know I'm just kidding. Your farm is beautiful and I love seeing pictures of it. :-)

-- Anonymous, June 29, 2001

Sorry Jim; I did just sent you the email. I just couldnt get to it till now. I am going crazy living in two places, I have to run back to the farm to meet people who want to look at animals, and keep the place spruced up and make sure all the remaining stock are safe and cared for, and fill orders for my web business, etc etc, and then I have to go back to Mpls/St Paul to meet various people that need meeting when you move to a new place, to get things set up. Its an hour and a half drive one way. Two hours when I take my daughter downtown MPLS for her vocal lessons once a week, or we go to her jams on Sunday night.

Bottom line, I get very little time on the puter; there is one at the new house, but its a laptop and the keyboard does not like my fingers, so it takes me forever to type so I ususally wait to respond when I get back here to the farm.

Cannot wait till this madness is over!! Pray for a buyer for the farm; someone who will keep it clean and natural!!

Blessings,

Christina,

On the animated graphic site, right click on the animation you want. A box will come up. Choose "Save Picture As". In the box that opens, find "My Documents" or "C:\Pictures" (in your computer), where ever you save yours. There is a tiny x in a box by the location window, click it and it will open. When you find where you want to save it, just click save.

In your email, go to INSERT, PICTURE, find the file in your computer, and click open, open, and that is all. Try it and let me know if you figured it out.

I need to make some more tutorials on these things. I can do screen capture so you all can see pics of the PC screen with these boxes open and such.

-- Anonymous, June 29, 2001

No problemo, E.M. :-)

Hope everything gets wrapped up soon on selling your farm.

-- Anonymous, June 29, 2001

Cindy:

I loooove to do pictures and graphics.

Me too!

-- Anonymous, June 29, 2001

Cindy, I must be really thick - where is "insert" supposed to be when I'm doing e-mail? On my browser? Is this the same as import/export? Duhhhhhhhhh!

-- Anonymous, June 29, 2001

Christina, if you're using Outlook Express for your email, the INSERT 'button' is on the top tool bar.

-- Anonymous, June 30, 2001

Thanks, Cindy and Joy. I kind of got it to work, but I don't usually use Outlook Express and when I try to send the e-mail I get an error. I think something is configured wrong. I'll try to figure it out.
