Picture Molding

I've heard people complain that the crown molding in their old house doesn't quite meet the ceiling, and how hard it is to fill the gap with caulk when repainting. What they were unaware of is the fact that their molding was picture molding and not crown molding.

Picture molding was common in the earlier part of the last century. This molding accommodated an "S" shaped bracket that supported a line from which the picture hung. So pictures could easily be moved around the room or adjusted in height without getting out the hammer. If you have this type of molding, but no brackets, try old house publications for a source. If you would like picture molding in your house, try a well-stocked lumberyard or mill for a supply of new material.

button button, who has the button?

Button, Button, Who's Got the Button? Keep an empty mayo jar in the laundry room. When you find buttons on the floor or counter or in the washing machine, drop them into the jar. Then when you discover where that missing button is needed, you'll know where to find it!
