Results of okra comparison between traditional and SFG (Gardening/general)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

The 41 remaining okra plants in the squarefoot garden square are not only keeping up with, are on some days surpassing the yeild of the 50 plants in the traditional rows. Pod size however is not the same. The SFG grown pods are aprox 25% smaller than the traditional row grown. I consider this a minor difference when the space requirement factor is considered. Sunlight saturation is probally the difference.

Thanks for the report Jay, I really love it when people let us know the results of trials like this.

Neat Jay! What is the difference in plant density (ie I take it the net yield is greater with the sfg even though pods are smaller). Do you think you can estimate the difference in yield.

We garden in raised beds, very intensively and are very happy with the results.

Kim,

So far I have harvested 181 pods from the traditional rows and a 163 from the SFG plot. These results are from nine cuttings so far and the per cutting yield is still improving with more frequent cuttings required.

That's cool Jay. I guess that means you have harvested on average 3.62 okra/plant on the traditional rows and 3.98 okra/plant from the sfg. If you think that the sfg plants really are 25% smaller then you can standardize for size and subtracting 25% you get 2.99 mass equivalent okra from the sfg. It might be fun to weight 10 pods from each to see if they really are 25% smaller. Of course I just like playing with numbers and what is important is per unit area your sfg is out producing the traditional rows.
