Jacque, if you post this question on The Poultry Connections General Waterfowl Forum, you will find lots of helpful experts on geese to answer this. There are also lots of links there that lead to many, many photos of all sorts of geese(Feathersite, Blue Hen Farm, Dogwood Acres, Quackers Home Page etc.). There are a number of "giant" breeds of geese and within these breeds are strains that vary as to size. Like the exhibition sizes of the giant Toulouse and African are much bigger than the production strains. Good luck and I know you will love your geese when you get them. :) Little Quacker

It would just about have to be African - the next biggest goose is the Tolousse and it isn't a tall bird, just a heavy bird.

I don't know of any other really big geese other than the African. Check Feathers ite Geese Index

Look up the different breeds of geese and see if something looks familiar.

Jacque,

I have seen some african geese at swap meets that are quite small. I have an african grey gander that is very large. He is easily twice the size of others I have seen. I also have a toulouse goose that is very large. Their offsprings are beautiful, large, gray geese.

Somebody reminded me a bit ago, the show strains are bigger than the production strains. So you might think about checking in to a poultry show nearby and take a gander ... I mean, a look ... at some show Africans, and see if that's closer to what you remember.
