The last £6m Bobby?NUFC ever spend?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

I suspect the Bellemy £6m may be the last time NUFC ever have/spend that kind of money on one player. They say a manager is only rated on the players he buys, will Bobby be judged a failiure at St james?

Well Dave, I guess we,ll find out IF young Bellamy is indeed a failure. Seems most on here have already written him off. That should really boost the lad's confidence. Lets all wait and see what else Bobby does over the summer. Maybe, just maybe, he has all the jig saw parts lined up. After all, we had a super dooper season last year, didn't we. Give him a break and we may well be pleasantly suprised..

Think in all fairness they (Management/Chairman) are trying. If they fail with the bid for Zenden they are aparently go to have a go for Kuivert. I honestly think thir hearts are with Newcastle but just years of sleaze and dubious dealings have overshadowed this. And PLEASE lets give Bellamy a chance dont write him off just yet

Yeah I'm all for giving Bellamy a chance. Coventry aren't the most productive team in the world and this can't help the lad. Solano has one of the best assists records in the league so this can only help him.

Obviously people have already judged him on his time at Coventry, but surely we should give him a fresh start at the Toon? Moaning about him before he's even played a game for us is in no way productive in our quest for progress so we should get behind him.

It is a canny big risk signing him, but it's one that may well pay off.

Lets not judge Bellamy before he's kicked a ball for us. He's got great pace, is a decent finisher, is young and he'll be out to prove a point! Fingers crossed!

We have to give him time, although I'm not sure he'll get it.

I thought he was appalling against us earlier this season. Appaling finisher, but bright enough to get 3 or 4 one on ones with the goalie, so pluses and minuses.

Response to The last £6m Bobby?NUFC ever spend?

I'm all for giving him a chance as it won't do any good slagging him off before he's kicked a ball.

However, is this not the same lad who chose to move to Coventry instead of us last season? Ok so we were waiting for the money from the Ferguson sale to Everton but seriously, could he not wait for 1 week? Doesn't show much ambition or commitment to me? I mean, as soon as Coventry got relegated he was being quoted as want out!

Response to The last £6m Bobby?NUFC ever spend?

It's not that people are slagging him off; it's just that we don't want to see NUFC signing the likes of him. It's world class players we want and people are frustrated. How we manage to attract those players is another matter of course. I'm fed up myself and I can't see how we are going to catch the top teams. It's all so depressing.

Sorry, that sounded like I was defending his signing (has he signed for sure?), I'm not! Like everyone I want us to be signing the top players in Europe but it doesn't seem likely.

God, what happened? 4 years ago everyone wanted to play for us!

Response to The last £6m Bobby?NUFC ever spend?

Yeah, I would much rather be signing the top class players.

Apparently Zenden's agent (who is also his dad) has interferred and is trying to persuade him not to join us.

Would you rather we signed Bellamy or signed nobody at all? If he is the best we can manage we'll just have to put up with it for now. Give him a chance.

From a Coventry City message board >>>

"possibly our worst ever buy.he cant take people on,pass, score and he gets knocked off the ball so easily.it would have been interesting to see how he would have got on in the first div.but hey if robson is mad enough to offer us decent money for him then he,s all yours.any news up your way on the rumours re.glass and gallacher signing for us.regards CTID"

He could be just bitter like the Wombles were about Cort but I can't even believe that when I type it! :O(

Having read wonkey's post Paul, the answer to your rhetorical question seems entirely obvious - we simply don't have £6 million to flush down the toilet, let alone allow other Club's to fully recoup their outlay on abject failures.

Response to The last £6m Bobby?NUFC ever spend?

Obviously I'd rather we spent the money on someone else, but there surely must be something good about him. Bobby's had his eye on him for 18 months and obviously still thinks he's worth £6m.

Although the Wales squad is by no means a team of world beaters, he still gets picked, so there must be some admirers out there.

I hope for our sake (as well as his) that last season was a one off and he is going to realise his potential here at Newcastle and belt in 25 goals next season (please)

It can work in the opposite way as well, a player well thought of moves and does badly - Marcelino - the Spanish international cum human money box.

He isn't world class by any stretch of the imagination, but is Bellamy really such a donkey?

Who can we get for less than 5mil who would be a top player at the top of his game. Not 'getting too old' or 'showing promise'? Transfer fees and wage demands are out of control.

I've said before and I'll say again.....we need players who will work for the team. Every minute of every game. Whether they're old, young, or somewhere in the middle. It's the only real hope we have of clawing our way back up the tables again and into a position where we can attract top names at the top of their career. I think the concentration should be more on building team spirit and graft. Ipswich, Charlton, and Sunderland have all shown how much difference that bit of graft can make. It's something our lot don't seem to be able to do consistently.

Course I don't see Europe's 'top names' fighting to sign for those clubs, either. Hmmmmmmmm. Mebbes I should rework this theory. ;-)

Just got this off that Rivals CCFC board:

"bellend is a 6 stone bag of sh it that can barely kick straight let alone summon enough power to kick thre ball hard enough past a keeper. He must be in the top ten of worst buys we have ever had the misfortune to be subjected to at highfield rd"

He was obviously a hero there then.

After all the whinging some people made about "bloody foreigners" and "buy British", would you prefer Bellamy for £6m or Sikora for £8m?

The Teamtalk "Your say" section for the Toon is surprisingly positive about the supposed Bellamy signing.

Paul, get with it matey! 6 illion quid on a player like this is CRAZY. I would much rather we realise Kegsies fears and stay signing free instead. Its unheard of for players to suddenly become worls beaters when in their previous clubs they were more than useless.
SORRY, we are in no position to gamble with a players form or 6 million pounds. Stupid, idiots signing.

I tend to agree with Ciara, and think we all have to be realistic here. Although we should try (as we have been) to sign top players, we shouldn't kid ourselves it's going to be easy to attract them at this stage. We DON'T want to pay over the odds (and here wages are more important than transfer fees) as imho it attracts the wrong sort of player who's ambitions are purely mercenary rather than trying to improve their careeer. But how could you convince a world class footballer that he's going to enhance his career at Newcastle? Impossible (near as) at the moment, given our track record over the last 3 years. So let's not beat ourselve up about the fact that the worlds top players aren't all knocking on the door begging to play for us and start concentrating on the real job in hand, which is to create a TEAM capable of getting us into Europe through the front door this time. A TEAM with players that stand the chance of being together for 3 years or so, rather than jumping from one club to another. No point spending on fancy icing on the cake, if you've burnt the cake... Ermm..I think I better leave it at that.

Not sure on Bellamy signing, however he still managed to knock in 8 goals in 39 appearances for the Blues and he was said to have a crap season!! Thats higher than our top scorer last season!!! Just a thought!!! AM

Response to The last £6m Bobby?NUFC ever spend?

I'd prefer to have Bellamy to Jeffers or some unknown foreign player.

I would think that NUFC have £15m -£20m to spend on 4 players. If we get Zenden for 7m and bellamy for 5m then there's still rnough in the kitty for a couple of defenders.

Bellamy for £6m or Jeffers for £10m.

Swift, I really hope we don't get Bellamy, but I can't do a lot about it. If he's signed, he's signed, and if he plays for us I'll give him my full backing like any other player in Black and White.

Could he really be a worse way to spend £6m than Marcelino?
