alternative energy communities

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread ------------------------------------------------------------------------

I realize that that there is a strong stance toward homesteading in this magazine. However, I was curious to know if anyone knew of communities that were based on alternative energy. I saw an advertisement once for a community like this, but could not find the magazine it was in to copy down the information. I am very much interested in finding a different way to live, but don't think I could or would want to go cold turkey. Thanks for the help.

Davis california has a interesting housing project which my horticulture class toured in 1985. It was built with a comunity orchard ,gardens, no fences, edible landscaping and the houses had greenhouse sun rooms with tile floors and fans so the rooms were used to heat parts of the house in the winter.

Check out WWW.homepower.com The entire mag is devoted to renewable energy. If they don't know, they'll be able to direct you to someone who does. Also, you might want to check out the Midwest Renewable Energy Association out of Custer Wi. Theres a story about them in the recent issue of Homepower, which is available FREE online at their website. Good Luck john

Did anyone hear "Car Talk" on public radio on Saturday Dec. 11? I missed most of it, but my wife said that there was a call from someone who lived in an intentional community that made their own diesel fuel from vegetable oil, but she didn't hear them say where i t was (and maybe they didn't tell.)

There are other communities that I know of where everyone uses alternative energy for all of their electrical needs, but I am not sure if they want to be publicized. "Communities" magazine might have that kind of info about the different communities.

A very good one is Dancing Rabbit in northeast Mo. Made up of mostly young professionals, they produce their own power, make their own fuel and yea they were on car talk asking a question about their bio-diesel powered van. They have a very comprehensive web site at www.dancingrabbit.org
