WRAL Cary Officials Come Up With New Way To Conserve Water

New System Should Help To Save Town's Drinking Water

CARY, 1:18 p.m. EDT June 22, 2001 -- Cary's new water system made a big splash Friday morning.

Town leaders turned on the sprinklers fed by the new system at the North Cary Park. It is the first reclaimed water system in the state. It diverts treated wastewater from the Neuse River Basin and pipes it to hundreds of businesses and homes for irrigation.

"It is environmentally sound to do these systems. It's financially, extremely attractive. It's just an absolutely, fantastic project," says Cary Mayor Glen Lang.

By using this water for irrigation, town leaders say it will save the drinking water supply.

Doesn't Cary stand for Central Area for Relocated Yankees?

Here in Tampa, the Tampons started the reclaimed water in ernest about 4-5 years ago.

The neighborhood we lived in at the time wanted a special assessment to put the lines in from the main that ran in front of the subdivision. We were told, in no uncertain terms, there was NOW WAY EVER we would be restricted on watering lawns, EVER AGAIN.... there is enough reclaimed water for the next CENTURY, at least!!!

When I heard that, I laughed at our association pres. Guess what? Last year, the reclaimed water went on restrictions. Surprise, surprise, surprise!

Meem, some people say it's the Collecting Area for Relocated Yankees, which is a bit more sinister. I guess some in the South think it will rise again or something. But the fact remains Cary has the lowest crime rate and cleanest streets around here, not to mention the highest average educational level ;)

Dood, yep, and what will happen here is that the moratorium on building will be lifted (because of water shortage), more houses and businesses will pop up and guzzle water, and the situation will return to where it was before this project went in--water rationing.
