I do not have parents of Temperance Jane Tucker born 1804, died June 09, 1896. Temperance Jane Tucker first married James William Brooks Abt. 1821 in Montgomery Co., NC. After James died Temperance married Alford Ledbetter, born March 10, 1805 and died May 12, 1886. Both Temperance and Alford are buried in the Old Ledbetter Cemetery, located on Ledbetter road in Stanly, Co., NC. I am a 4th. great- grandson of Temperance and James Brooks.

BIRTH & PARENTS According to her grave marker Temperance Jane Tucker was born in 1804. No one has found proof of who Tempy's parents were. Based on geography and age, I believe the George Tucker, listed in the 1790, 1800 and 1830 cenuus records of Montgomery Co., NC was her father. Men generally courted women who resided within a one day horse ride which probably meant there and back. Tempy's first husband was James William Brooks, son of William Brooks who lived nearby. Her second husband, Alfred Ledbetter also lived in the area. Also nearby were Bryant Austin and other families who appeared near Tempy. This George Tucker family was the only Tucker family in the area prior to and after Tempy's birth. The 1810 census indicates George Tucker household with a female in the right age bracket, 0-10. Tempy was on page 92 of the 1830 census and George on page 93. Also on page 92 with Tempy were Leonard Tucker and Rachel Tucker, reported wife of Peter Tucker.
