NUFC.com report it's definitely on the cards - at a fee of about £4mm.
We just never seem to learn.

I AM NEVER GOING TO LIVE THIS DOWN, MY COV MATES WILL RIP ME TO SHREADS.

he is a clart

-- Anonymous, June 22, 2001

First off... Swifty: you have Coventry mates? How did that happen? Secondly it is quite possible that Bellamy might thrive in the right system. Let's just hope and pray it's ours!!!!

-- Anonymous, June 22, 2001

bob's probably looking for somebody to with a bit of pace to play with cort or shearer. may not be as bad as you think.

as long as he doesn't keep going on about the countryside and drinking 2-3 pints 2-3 times per week it'll be ok.

-- Anonymous, June 22, 2001

It is all very depressing. The only glimmer I can take from it is that he will be replacing Gallacher. A player who runs about an awful lot, so probably creates openings, whilst not being much of a goal threat himself. Obviously that's one of the downsides as well. That'll mean we boast Bellamy, Lee, Dyer, Bassedas and Ameobi who would all prefer to lay the ball off than have a shot in front of goal. Shudder. Cort and Shearer will need to be considerably fitter than last season.

I've got a feeling he'll be signed as a running keeper, like in three pots in.

In case your wondering I was on Vodka Red bulls in the early hours, weird how you wake up with a ping but make no sense.

And BTW once was our very own Steve Howey was at the quayside but he didn't pick a fight or get into a tight scrape with a busty blonde or anything. I'll make something up later.

.com reporting he signed this morning 4-6mil

-- Anonymous, June 23, 2001

Ok, lets face it, how many strikers do well in a relegated team ??

He is young, eager to learn and most of all fast. Bellamy also know the way to the goal, he was scoring freely for Norwich, so give him some credit !!!

-- Anonymous, June 23, 2001

Agree Vatos! I think he's a little underestimated.

-- Anonymous, June 23, 2001

Do you think he's £6 million underestimated Roxy?
Does anyone think he's £6 million better than Kevin Gallagher?

-- Anonymous, June 23, 2001

He's about 15 years younger than Kevin Gallagher, Clarky....

-- Anonymous, June 23, 2001

He's about 30 years younger than me dougal, but that still doesn't value him as a £6mm footballer!
This guy was an abject failure at Coventry; he desperately wants out; and Coventry can't afford his wages in the Nationwide. So what do we do? We rush in and give Coventry their money back on the guy. I simply can't believe there would have been a queue to pay anything like £6mm for the guy, and that anyone else would have been so ridiculously impetuous.
At £3- 4 million he may have been worth a gamble, but £6 million!!

We may be close to being broke, but I'm afraid we still have far more money than sense.

-- Anonymous, June 23, 2001

It's desperation, nothing less and I for one despair!

My feelings today are that we'll get stuffed by the Mackems and Robson will chuck it by Christmas. Frankly, if he went today I wouldn't care. I'm pig sick.

-- Anonymous, June 23, 2001

Personally, I think Carl Cort was a desperation buy, too. For a start, we don't know that we are paying that much for him until it's all finalised and we don't really know what role he is being bought for - as someone has pointed out, he is naturally an attacking midfielder. He may not be the only forward we buy. He may be being bought for his pace - let's face it, Shola isn't a top notch goalscorer but he does all sorts of damage with his pace and movement. I know he didn't score against us last season, but he also made a twats of our defenders several times: I remember both Goma and Hughesie commenting on his pace.

-- Anonymous, June 23, 2001

if this is our 'big' signing, god help us. He's at least 3 million over priced. And he's ugly,

-- Anonymous, June 23, 2001

I like the plan, in two weeks after the transfer system is sorted out, players that cost £6m may be actually worthless, we've bought a worthless player for £6m.

Bobby's resignation letter methinks. The Mag demanded the 'jerks' give Bobby some proper money, they should have just invested it in the Hotel.

-- Anonymous, June 23, 2001

Well it seems as though Bellamy is wors now so as far as I'm concerned he's one of the very best strikers in the Premier (right up there with the likes of Shearer, Cort and Ameobi!) I'll continue to think this until proven otherwise.

I don't watch any football apart from Newcastle so I know litle of this lad. He made a big name for himself at Norwich but failed at Coventry apparently. Well, if he can recapture his form, at £6m (or is it £4m?) he will prove to be a steal as he is very young and has years ahead of him. Let's get behind the lad and wish him well.

-- Anonymous, June 24, 2001

Dougal - Shola...pace? Your video must be running fast.

-- Anonymous, June 24, 2001

Shola DOES have pace ..that's the evidence of my own eyes, having been to all but three matches, home and away last season. Pace isn't just being Michael Owen or Kieron Dyer, you know.

Im having nightmares already.

-- Anonymous, June 24, 2001

I'm afraid we've just thrown 6 million pounds away. Anyone who apologises for this player does not watch football. This is a disgraceful purchase. Bobby has made the mistake which will cost him his job, i'm stunned.

-- Anonymous, June 25, 2001

Well said Jonno!

"Bellamy our best player? What planet are you on? He missed more one- on-one's in one season than the rest of the team put together. If we can get shot of him and get Joachim in for half the price, we'll be laughing"
"If you gonna post on this site keep it sensible .bellend is a 6 stone bag of sh it that can barely kick straight let alone summon enough power to kick thre ball hard enough past a keeper. He must be in the top ten of worst buys we have ever had the misfortune to be subjected to at highfield rd."
"newcastle are to bid for bellamy the old man has lost it.thay are going to give us money for him.g/s wants to keep him .i hope he goes i hate him it was never his problem allways the rest of the teams."
"its true yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss"
"quite possibly our worst ever player.no loyalty, no skills, awful"

Apparently, the deal is done, at £6million.

Bellamy is quoted as saying: "It's the best thing to happen to me in football to date. It's a massive club with fanatical supporters. I want to play the highest standard of football I can and achieve things in the game, and I believe things will start turning around for this club.
The move to Newcastle will make me a better all-round player and linking up with Gary Speed can only improve our understanding on international duty as well
."
Speaking to the South Wales Echo, he added: "When you have such quality around like Speed, Alan Shearer and Kieron Dyer, it can only enhance your own game. I just can't wait for the season to get going."

In turth he's still just a young lad, and I sincerely hope he gets off to a good start to get the crowd firmly behind him.
Following a dreadful season with Coventry I believe we've paid way over the odds to secure his transfer. However, this is not of his making, and I only hope the change of environment works in his favour, and that he sees a resurgance in his faltering career under Bobby Robson - who has shown enormous faith in the lad.

Welcome to the graveyard for the inbetweenies. There's a space for your name just under Tomasson, Andersson and Maric. Yet another player who prefers to play off a big, strong centre forward who will be as much use as tits on a bull when the player in question (we have only 1) is injured. I would have thought that last season would have demonstrated the paucity of goalscoring talent in our massively expensive squad.

If we are going to argue that Bellamy is a great signing because he is quick, though lightweight but does at least have a left foot and gets into goal scoring positions even if he has trouble putting them away, then my response is Stephen Glass. Free, quick, lightweight has no trouble putting chances away.

Other than that, please win me round Mr Bellamy; you have an awful lot to live down.

-- Anonymous, June 25, 2001

Apparently the Coventry chairman is up here finalizing the Bellamy deal and he wants Barton in part settlement.

-- Anonymous, June 26, 2001

Hmmmm...cover at right back is currently Griffin (dubious injury record) and Aaron Hughes. AH is a better centre back than right back, which leaves us with...erm?

Whatever his faults, Warren is usually available for selection and mostly plays at least averagely.

top bloke too.

Duffers of the year Some interesting names, well not exactly interesting but not entirely exepected.

-- Anonymous, June 26, 2001

Hey - this is still a live thread.

-- Anonymous, April 15, 2002

Quite entertaining as well! Thanks, Gibbo. :-D

-- Anonymous, April 15, 2002

Ahh! Yes. Thank goodness I wasn't around in June last year to join in the criticism. Just goes to show what we all know compared with Mr Robson ehh!

-- Anonymous, April 15, 2002

Can I just say (in the absence of any evidence to the contrary) that I always thought Bellamy was an inspired purchase? Anyone buying that? No? Didn`t think so.....

-- Anonymous, April 15, 2002

Hmm! Pleased I kept my gob shut! (;o) Mind to be fair, I didn`t know the first thing about Bellamy, but I do know that everybody and their third cousin who had the least interest in football thought that Bobby had lost his marbles! Clever Bobby......very clever! (:o)

-- Anonymous, April 16, 2002

ps. Not suggesting that anyone on here who thought it was a good signing `didn`t know the first thing about football`. I meant people outside of the Toon Army. (Hate to upset anyone you know! (;o))

-- Anonymous, April 16, 2002

he's one of the very best strikers in the Premier ... he will prove to be a steal

I can't say I regret anything I said on this issue ...
