Auto Focus Problem, Canon 28 - 80 mm f3.5 - 5.6 V USM

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

The lens will ONLY auto focus at 50mm. It will not auto focus from 28mm - 45mm and 55mm - 80mm. The contacts have been cleaned. Does anybody have a fix or should I buy a new lens. The lens is 2 years old.

You should try another lens on your body to rule out any camera problems (not likely). The 28-80 is an inexpensive lens (around $100 at http://www.bhphotovideo.com/) so authorized Canon repairs will likely cost more than the lens is worth.

If you decide to replace it, the Canon EF 28-105 3.5-4.5 USM II is a much better lens: faster aperture & AF, FT-M, distance window, metal mount, metal gear train & outer barrel. It's much better made, and for about $235 at B&H it's a deal.

Thanks, the camera body will autofocus with my Canon Telefoto lens.
