Four Dead In Colorado Murder-Suicide

Apartment Rented To Police Officer, Officials Say

AURORA, Colo., 3:19 p.m. EDT June 21, 2001 -- Four people -- two children and two adults -- were found dead Thursday morning inside a suburban Denver condominium rented to Aurora police officer, police said.

The victims were apparently shot as the result of an apparent murder-suicide, police said.

"It appears at least one of the children were killed by gunshots," Aurora police spokeswoman Fran Gomez said.

The apartment is rented to an Aurora police officer who has been on the force for three years, although authorities have not confirmed that the officer is among the dead.

The officer transferred to Aurora in 1998 from New York, and his colleagues said that they weren't aware of any problems that he was having.

The bodies of a man, woman, young boy, and young girl were discovered by the victims' teenage sons. The two teens called 911 just after 9 a.m., and an officer arrived on the scene shortly afterward.

The officer confirmed that there were four bodies inside, but could not enter without a search warrant. Police were waiting for a search warrant to examine the inside of apartment and retrieve the bodies on Thursday afternoon.

Neighbors said that they heard gunshots early Thursday morning. They said that they thought that the family appeared happy and that the father was "a very nice guy."

David Overman, 61, who heads the apartment complex rental association, told the Associated Press that the family had been living there for three or four years.

"They're always taking the two younger kids out to go on different trips," he said.

The victims' identities have not been made public. Police believe that the incident was the result of domestic dispute.

Some people evidently didn't get this much-expected closure thing with McVeigh's execution. From my local paper this morning: "An Ulster County sheriff's deputy was shot and downtown New Paltz was under siege for over an hour Thursday morning as a man who police said was upset about Timothy McVeigh's execution fired an assault rifle at random, striking numerous buildings and vehicles and endangering the lives of police officers and civilians..."
