Mayon volcano spews more lava in the Philippines

By Associated Press, 6/21/2001 05:22

MANILA, Philippines (AP) Lava flowed a mile down the side of one of the most active volcanos in the Philippines on Thursday.

Scientists don't believe it's about to erupt, but met to discuss whether to raise its public alert about a possible eruption from the current level of three on a five-point scale

Level three means an eruption could occur within weeks. Level four indicates that an eruption is expected within days, and level five means a hazardous eruption is in progress.

Scientists are waiting for more readings on lava fountaining and explosions or ash puffs, said Raymundo Punongbayan, director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

Although no explosions have been recorded on the Mayon volcano 200 miles southeast of Manila since it became active in January, a sudden outburst of gas-filled lava could still be coming, the institute said.

The 8,118-foot volcano's activity began in January when it puffed gas and ash, a repeat of the conditions before it last erupted in February 2000, leading officials to evacuate about 68,000 residents. Its most violent eruption occurred in 1814, killing more than 1,200 people.

I checked out Popacatepetl this morning and it looked beautiful--still heavy snow on the slopes and a thick plume of vapor. I think CENAPRED is simply putting stills up, don't think it's a live shot. Not sure what's going on, but the current photo is certainly a pretty one.
