25th August 1984 was our first day up having been promoted and we were away at Leicester but I was at the end of my holiday in Greece. Drunkenly phoned home at 5pm British time to wish my mother happy birthday, tell her we'd had a great time, and asked how the lads had got on. Oh it was 3-2 she said followed by pips. Had we won ?

Looking back over other 25th Augusts, we won 2-1 at West Ham in 1973, we won 2-0 at Spurs in 1976, in fact I can't find a time in my supporfting life when we have lost on the 25th August, up until 1999.

That was a dark night. Evil forces came together. Firstly we allowed Sunderland supporters inside the ground for the first time in years. A dark and mysterious manager was in charge of our side and he decided to play another dark force in Silvio Maric, a kid who was never going to be good enough in Jamie McClen, and a boy in Robinson instead of either the England captain or a Scottish international, our 4th centre half of the season, a on-loan goalie. The darkness was compounded by God forgetting to keep an eye on the weather, the darkness took advantage of the missing roof and let the rain fall like never before. Such black black darkness.

When there has been such darkness the light has to return slowly. A small match was lit over the next few days and the light that is Bobby Robson twinkled in.

It will have taken two years but on 25th August 2001 the light will be switched back on, full beam. No rain, no dark spirits, only hopeful, bright, smiling eyes.

That nearly brought a tear to my eye. ;oD

I'm not superstitious myself, but very pleased we are playing you early on. Regardless of the result, mags games tend to kick start the team.

Ippos(h) first game is a good one. We can hopefully use our ability to demoralise teams to get them off to a bad start. Fulham away I don't fancy so much. Third game is a formality ;oD
