Is there a middle road between priced, closed software and free, open software?

The corporate style of software development and external relations has created a backlash of discontent, especially among smaller and independent developers. This is exemplified by Apache, Linux and other free software development efforts, a leftist reaction to the excesses of rightist domination of platforms and source code. If the pendulum can swing from the right to the left, can it also find a resting place somewhere in between, that addresses the leftist concerns about control and the rightist disagreements about sustainability?
