Find the Leak

Unless we see or hear water leaking, there is no reason to think there might be a leak. Sometimes the first sign of trouble is a high water bill. If the bill is higher than usual and consumption has been normal, start looking for the leak. If all the possible suspects check out (dripping faucet or running toilets), the leak might be in the line coming into the house. If you have a water meter try this method:

Shut the water off where it comes into the house. Note the reading on the meter and then go to work (your job). When you come home, check the meter reading again. If the two readings are different, there is a leak between the meter and the house.
