An Alltel representative acknowledged serious problems began after it switched to a new billing system April 7 but said those problems were temporary.

"The billing conversion is killing us," said Stephanie Johanns, an Alltel vice president. The company had expected some problems, she said. But it had not expected that a billing mistake by AT&T would cause 8,000 local customers to tie up Alltel service representatives at the same time, she said.
