Go on, call me a jerk

With the news that Paul Murray and Robbie Elliot are 2 of our 3 "big" signings this summer i've got to say i'm getting very worried. It's the Wadsworth effect again isn't it? Murray?
i can only imagine someone somewhere is far too trusting...

Awful Players

Is this information confirmed? This makes me nervous...

Jerk!

Well Dot Com reckons the third is far more recognisable. If we can get shot of Martha AND get someone into the bargain I will be happy. If the players we have stay relatively fit and get a run in the side together I think we can qualify for Europe and put a decent cup run together.

I always hated to get soft packets...

some of the more, senior, posters have no choice Jussi...

who said anything about "BIG"??????? I think we all hoped "BIG" but that has yet to be done in this century, and I do not call Carl Cort a "BIG" signing.

-- Anonymous, June 19, 2001

Carl Cort is almost 6' 4"! Although it hs to be said we need more big signings because we tend to lose out in the aerial battles!

-- Anonymous, June 19, 2001

I was going to start a thread along the same lines swift. I don't care if number 3 is Ronaldo or Zidane - if that's our lot this summer then we are in the bottom third next season, no question

-- Anonymous, June 19, 2001

Really swift? are they that conditioned... ;-)

-- Anonymous, June 19, 2001

I disagree. If we get the right players fit we can push for a european place.

Last season we had all the fuss with Domi leaving, Given being stupid, no strikers, Goma leaving half way through and Marcellino providing a negative effect on the squad.

Get rid of a few of these negative aspects and we will see a marked improvement in performances. And that is all before we put in the new signings.

Robson has obvioulsy targeted the left midfield problem. Glass came in and helped the balance of the side and we looked a better team. If we get a decent left midfielder we will see more assured performaces from Quinn and people like Bassedas will have real options to choose from for once in a blue moon.

I think ambition comes into it, Murray smacks of a blinkered old boys approach. Elliot, is that a sympathy/loyalty thing?
No one's saying why aren't we buying Thuram et al, which we might have done if things hadn't been so badly managed. That's why it is important not to continue in the Hamilton vein, which it appears we are in a big way.

-- Anonymous, June 19, 2001

exactly swift - why don't we make a 15 million offer for Vierra? Why not try and get Cole back from Man U or Viduka from Leeds - because we have no ambition

-- Anonymous, June 19, 2001

We're all far too sensible to think we should be in the bidding for Thuram! We've all analysed why we are no longer in a position to sign the world's best.

Again, the only rumours I have heard with regard to Murray have been on here so I'm not getting too worked up about it. Until the players are at St James with the shirt we shouldn't start to judge th ambition of the club.

It's been said before, the board could target a dozen players but if they don't want to sign for us what do we do? The squad has been slashed under Robson and needs additions.

It is a really difficult situation for all concerned with transfers at the club.

Kegsy,

What would be the point in going for Viera or Viduka? We haven't got a hope in hell of signing players like tha, no matter how much money we chuck at them.

£15 million for Viera? Add another £5million at least and we've used up all our transfer budget on one player and we still have no cover up front and left midfield.

There's ambition and plain stupidity.

it seems like we have 15mil to spend. It would be a much better idea to go and at least try and get one quality player, NOT 3 or 4 decidedly average peformers (and indeed nonentities) Quality IS Quality and i doubt Jason Euell is suddenly going to be like Hasselbaink in 12 months time, or Gudjohnsen miraculously turns into Jardel or Murray starts to play like Zidane. Of course not, buy average GET average. No point in talking of balance or team play, the Prem is always won by a team with top class performers in each position. HOW could Paul Murray improve our team? Are we to be insulted here by being told there was no place for non prem proven players in the summer spree only to end up with a QPR reject?

We haven't got a team capable of challenging for the League cup at the moment never mind a top 6 spot. We need players who are world class - we don't have that any more. Maybe if we can sign one - it would show that we have ambiition and others would be interested 'if you build it - they will come' type philosophy. We should be up there with Man U, we should certainly be challenging the likes of Leeds. We should have the money to go out and buy these players.

Sorry DB it's lack of ambition as far as I'm concerned.

I'm not convinced the Club lacks ambition. It certainly lacks vision and top-class business management, and crucially it also lacks serious MONEY.
We have gone the same path as Clubs like Man City and Everton, investing heavily in players without recouping it in the income generated by success. You can only do this for so long, and sooner or later the well runs dry.
If you read my latest post on the "Stonehouse resigns" thread you'll see my thoughts on how I believe his resignation perhaps ties in to what I believe is arguably a last throw of the dice by Shepherd & Hall to invest in a few more players to turn the playing situation around.
It may well be a high-risk strategy, and we all badly need it to succeed, or the long- term consequences for NUFC could be dire indeed.

Ambition is the key. 3 years ago i remember reading a Leeds,Blackburn match report, 0-0 was the result. It said both teams represented the worst of the prem. Not saying that now are they (about both sides)? Yep, they didn't spend tons on World class players BUT they had ambition and they still have it AND a shit hot youth set up. Now they have bought Ferdinand and will probably get more...i'm not saying we couldn't be where they are, BUT we'd better get moving because I can see Blackburn (for instance) might be better placed...

-- Anonymous, June 19, 2001

If I were in charge at Newcastle I wouldn't be buying average players. If we've got £15 Million, I'd spend it on a £10 million striker or winger and a £5 million Defender. I'd then tell Man U that if they really want Dyer then we would only consider a swap deal for Butt and Solksjear. If they aren't interested then do a similar deal with Leeds, Harte and Bridges for Dyer. We NEED 4 or 5 quality players and £15 M isn't enough to get more than two decent players. if we have to swap Dyer to get a couple of good players in positions that we need then I'd sacrifice him.

-- Anonymous, June 19, 2001

not BUILDING a team though is it? You can't sacrifice your best players, you HAVE to add to them...

-- Anonymous, June 19, 2001

If we had £50 million to spend we'd still struggle to sign quality players without the carrot of European Football!

And if we go down the road of Boro and throw money at ageing mercenaries will it really help us? Those players are here for the money and nothing else. Is that what we want.

-- Anonymous, June 19, 2001

No it isn't. Without either the financial or "pulling" ability to secure the established players we need to effect a "quick fix", I feel we should accept the harsh realities of the situation we find ourselves in.
This dictates taking some time to build a squad capable of competing with the best by acquiring developing talent that is within our range of affordability, and guys who are hungry to make a name for themselves - rather than money-grubbing free- loaders.
This course would probably take 3-4 seasons to bear fruit. However, I genuinely believe if the the facts of the situation and the strategy to be pursued were explained openly and honestly to the fans and the shareholders, it would be widely supported. The other course of action - the "shit or bust" approach - is I believe extremely risky.

Where did this stuff about Murray come from? I saw it on TOTT. If it's true it's a joke. Robson said he wouldn't sign Prutton from Forest cos he wants players who will slot right in. A player from a crap Div 1 (now2) team is hardly going to help. Please tell me this is wrong!!!!!

As for Elliot - he would be free and I expect Murray would cost nowt so lets hope the remaining 22p is spent on someone who will inspire us. I'm not exactly hopeful though.

-- Anonymous, June 19, 2001

did you not say that swear word 'Euell' yesterday Lynda?

-- Anonymous, June 19, 2001

Well I heard it was a possibility. Is Murray, though a different type of player, any better than Euell? I have no real opinion of Euell in all honesty but he is rated by Wimbledon fans - if that means anything. Div 1 players though, both of them. Neither a great prospect for us I suspect.

As someone alreaady said, BR wouldn't sign Prutton cos he was untested so is Murray going to be any better? How did Murray's name crop up anyway? That's what I want to know!
