Father, daughter win hollering titles By The Associated Press Jun 17, 2001 : 10:30 am ET

SPIVEY'S CORNER, N.C. - A Sampson County father and daughter won the men's and women's titles Saturday at the 33rd annual National Hollerin' Contest.

Larry Jackson of Salemburg won his third men's title with a performance that included a hollered version of "Amazing Grace." Kevin Jasper, the 2000 men's champ, placed second.

Jackson's daughter, Heather Branch, won the women's title

John Mark Herring of Clinton won the Junior Hollerin' contest, impressing the crowd by "showin' how my daddy calls 'coon dogs."

John, 10, wore denim overalls, a plaid shirt and red bandannas. He also won the contest in 1999 and appeared on David Letterman's late-night talk show. He said he hopes he'll be asked to return, but would like a little more respect from folks in New York.

"I liked New York and everything they had there, but they were making fun of us, like we were country hicks," he said.
