Michael here..the race is underway and the first info we've heard is that it is going slower than expected. Onewscosmos reports that after about 8 km, the men are about 3 minutes slower than expected.

Michael here again...Last year we could follow Jukola like via a Finnish radio station (Swedish speaking). They're apparently providing live coverage again this year! So, I've connected to http://www.yle.fi/extrem/ and am waiting for reports.

Michael here again....the real audio from the radio coverage leaves a bit to be desired. But, I could tell that they were talking about orienteering. I thought I heard that Bjorn Eriksson (?) from Jarfalla (?) might have lead after one leg....but, I could be wrong.

Nope. I got it wrong. I'm listening now and learn that Jan Troeng from Storvik won the first leg with Hans Mard finishing in the same time. I think Mard is from Jarfalla and Eriksson is from Halden.

Michael here (still) ... The Jukola results page has first leg results. But, my connection doesn't seem to be doing so well. Onewscosmos has a report, but it is in Finnish only. While I don't know a thing about Finnish, I think I can make out some of the info.

I think they might be saying that after the first leg Delta and Halden are close to the lead. Bakkelaget is 2 minutes back. Lidingo is 3:20 back.

Michael again...I took a short break and now I've got a big list of results from the first leg. Taking a look at some of the teams we usually follow...

IKHP 1 is 56th about 3 minutes back and 2 seconds ahead of Lidingo's second team. Lidingo 2 was one second ahead of IF Thor.

Kenny Walker Jr, running for Cambridge Sports Union finished 465th about 19 minutes back.

Michael again...we're getting news (rumor?) that Halden has taken the lead somewhere on the second leg.

-- Swampfox (wmikell@earthlink.net), June 16, 2001.

Time to go out for another O' training session. So, I'll leave the Jukola for a few hours.

Here is the place to follow English language Jukola coverage:

Michael here...back from training. It looks like they're out on the sixth leg. How did the fifth leg look?

Halden is in the lead ahead of a Finnish club Turun Suun*. Lidingo 1 is in 7th, about 3:30 behind. IKHP is 19th. Turun Suun* second team is looking good. They are 27th. I think Raymond's son is running the last leg for them.

I don't see my favorite team, IFK Lidingo 2. Maybe they dq'd?

Still Michael...I see what is going on. I was looking at just the to 130 teams for the fifth leg. IFK lidingo 2 has dropped back and is not in the top 130 any more. IF Thor is not there either.

-- Swampfox (wmikell@earthlink.net), June 16, 2001.

Mook here now... IF Thor lies 156th after 5 legs while the leaders are now out on the 7th and final leg. Turun Sun* leads by roughly a minute over Halden going into that leg.

-- Swampfox (wmikell@earthlink.net), June 16, 2001.

Third is Kalevan RAsti, then 4th and 5th together are Turun Met* and Malungs. IFK Lidingo is 6th... Meanwhile looking at the standings after 5 legs: IKHP 2 has dropped from sight while their first time lies 19th following the Devil Runner's run.

-- Swampfox (wmikell@earthlink.net), June 16, 2001.

Mook here... 3 teams within 5 seconds with 1km to go... and the winner is...

-- Swampfox (wmikell@earthlink.net), June 16, 2001.

Mook again... We think TuS won! With Tu.Met. 2nd followed by Halden.

Thanks to the http://www.onewscosmos.com/jukoladb.asp website, the results are projected. The photos are so sharp, I really get a feel for what the event is all about. Missed the live reports (dinners each evening with newlyweds).

Late Breaking News...Today we learned that Magnus ran the third leg at Jukola. He apparently ran disguised as "Bobby Östberg" from OK Hedstrommen. "Bobby" ran 1:43:51 for the 13.2 km leg. That's definetly a decent race.

-- Michael (mike_eglinski@kcmo.org), June 18, 2001.

Magnus...hmmm, that name sounds so familiar. I remember a couple of years back at a training camp here in Laramie, there was some Swedish dude who ran *really* slowly. Could it have been the same person?

Kenny Walker, Jr. took some photos at Jukola. Check them out:
