Help! My hen is deathly ill. She seemed to not stand up straight so I put her in a separate cage from the other free raom birds. She has just gotten worse. I thought she may have had a heart attack or stroke. She could not seem to walk right. She can not hold her head up now. It even seems upside down. Also a 6wk old chick in a completely different group has terribly swollen eyes. One is completely closed and the other is closing rapidly. I just used the easy eye puffer on her because thats all I have right now. Please Help.

This sounds like limberneck to me. This is caused by botulism poisoning. If so, there is very little you can do. Have your given your chickens any kitchen scraps lately?

ummmm. I don't have an answer, i just have another question. I recently got some chickes, for the first time after much research. They seemed quite healthy when we got them, however some of them now around 3 weeks of age are having diarrhea and it smells terrible. We were wondering if there is anything natural that we can do, short of buying the medicated chicken feed. Any advice would be welcome. thank you. sierra

We lost a "girl" last year to West Nile Virus. It almost looked liked like a poisoning that attacked her nervious system. She slowly started to deteriorate. First she couldn't perch, when she lost control of her head and went down hill very rapidly from that point. She never lost her appetite. When we didn't know what her problem was, we tried to nurse her back to health. When we also found a crow with the same problem and I called MSU to report the problems we were having on our property. We were told that it was West Nile. We put our girl down , dug a hole and burned the carcas. It was an awful disease.

the same thing that is happening to your baby chick with the swollen eyes is happening to one of my babies. Well, it started out with what looked like an eye infection and I applied some Neomycin and Polymyxin opthalmic ointment on the one eye(wich I noticed is watery looking). Then today I noticed the other eye is rapidly shutting too, except this one looks like it has some goo. I applied the solution and put it on quarantine from the chicks. I believe they get these things from their own feces, it gets stuck to their feet, then they scratch their eyes. It looks like its health is deteriorating also, which I dont understand since they are on a medicated starter. I am not even sure if i have seen it eat or drink water, to me it looks like it cant even see. Did any responses come in for your problem? Someone please help. Thanks.
