Letters to the Chron

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Once again it seems that the Chron has stirred the emotions of Newcastle United fans to such an extent that the club will hear about it again and probably have to issue a statement.

Much of the same has been discussed on here with the conclusion that we are not in a position to sign the world class stars that so many people want.

So what good is the Chronicle's input here? What can the club do? Issue a statement saying we have exactly £XXmillion to spend, therefore increasing the transfer values of any player they make a bid for? Say they are trying to sign player A, B, C, and D then sit back and watch other clubs enter the race?

I am more than happy for the club to sit tight and come up with the right players as long as they do. When they do it is in their hands not ours and no amount of pressure from the fans is really going to make them conclude any deal quicker than normal. Do people think that the club are sitting on their arses doing nothing? Shepherd has gone public to say that despite being on holiday Robson is in constant touch with the board with regard to transfer targets.

How many fans would go on holiday and keep their work mobiles turned on?

I'm as bad as anyone when it comes to speculation about who we should we sign but putting public pressure on the Board and the manager to come up with the unreal is embarrassing. We live in an age where we feed off the media coverage of our football club but we should not be too quick to take all the paper talk as gospel.

Will these people be calling for the Manager's job soon, probably!

Awfully Pathetic?

I have never written to the press, (except mebbees that time when you got the chance to win a blow up doll with life like hair and 3 working orifices) I think that on slow days in the close season "sports writers" sit at there desk and think of ways to wind people up. At least with Viz you new Neil Armstrong didn't actually walk on the Sun (named after that popular paper the news of the world) but the Chronic keeps you guessing.

The assumption here is simple, lack of activity =no money, no money= no players. Don't be surprised when we end up spending £10m on a player we don't need (i.e a keeper) or want (i.e. Jeffers)....

You're right, there is a general assumption about 'lack of activity' but that is all it is, an assumption.

Assume, "to accept (something) to be true without question or proof"

The fans know chuff all about what the transfer plans are of the club and while we can all second guess what is going I think it is wrong that there should be such a level of criticism eminating from press tittle tattle. Sure when we start the season with the same team as last year and we've made no improvements to the side then by all means have a go, but until then.....

Last season Carl Cort was never mentioned until he signed for us!

I remember that! The first thing I read of it was on ITV Teletext. Beardsley was saying what a good signing he would be!

The day before Shearer signed, the entire football world knew that he was going to Man Utd.

I am quite sure the board is working to secure the players Robson wants. Jeffers was a done deal with Everton apparently, and that was a cash deal, something Arsenal couldn't manage (God knows why not after all the money they made off Anelka, Overmars etc) I think patience is called for. If we buy someone today we've got fully 2 months to convince ourselves he's a waste of money before he's kicked a ball. :-)

Jonno,
I believe the deal Arsenal have proposed for Jeffers comprises staged payments contingent on him proving his fitness by playing nominated numbers of games - rather than a straightforward lack of available brass.
Given his poor fitness record this makes perfect sense to me - especially if he has already told them he wants to sign for them, and is prepared to wait to make it happen.
What is certain is that Everton need the dough, and if Jeffers threatens to sit tight until next summer - when he will be available for nothing - sooner or later Everton will need to negotiate on Arsenal's offer.
Seems to me that Francis Jeffers is going to Arsenal, and the mackems can relax.

Just read the appalling article in The Ronnie that DeB refers to.
The guy that authored this cr@p is the same guy who wrote the similarly dreadful article as a follow up to the icNewcastle "Who should the Toon sell to finance summer their purchases" poll - a poll that was well-known to have been thoroughly bastardised by the ".com" goons.
That article was so bad, and potentially so damaging to the Toon's interests, that I finished up penning a formal complaint to The Ronnie.

This guy - Ross Gregory - is the worst kind of gutter journalist, and as a local newspaper The Ronnie should be thoroughly ashamed of providing him a vehicle to spout his dangerous garbage. Tosser!

Peolpe esp sports hacks can be a bit thick. Every player is on holiday right now, most of those on bosman's don't actually becaome free until the month end and the transfer system is up in the air. No one has bought anyone yet apart from Manure RVN & that was last years deal.

We're not the only club who is dragging it's feat.

As a protest, I'll not be buying the ronnie today, but would like to know what it said.

Anyone fancy posting it on here?
