Mendes da Silva

Astonishingly no one on here has really debated what the prospective arrival of Mendes da Silva will have on our squad, and consequently how Robson must view our young defenders.

I have read that; he's the long term replacement for Barton, that he's better in central defence, and that he's possibly viewed as a project for the defensive midfield position.

However it's the talk of him being a defender that has me concerned. We currently have Griffin, Hughes, O'Brien, and two Caldwells fighting for a place next to Nick The Greek or Bartons job.

How will the arrival of this lad upset our current bairns?

According to the BBS Dutch Scouting System (i.e. Stevo), Mendes Da Silav has been hailed as the new Frank Rijkard, which implies that his long term future could be at Defensive Midfielder.

When Forest are quoting £4million for David Prutton it is hard to argue against the logic of this move, even though the fee talked about for Silva is just under £3million.

All we re doing is making sure that if one or two of our young ones don't make it we still have successes.

Havig a Tino, Shearer, Ferdinand, Beardsley forward line was magical but it would be very nice to have the next decades worth of Dixon, Keown, Adams and Winterburn.

I think we have the makings of such a combination MacBeth. Defenders these days are not going to dominate matches to the degree that Adams etc did but we have a crop of young defenders who could well, with the right exposure and experience, ensure we have a brighter future.

Come on Bobby give them a go! Spend the money on excellent midfielders and attackers who would give the young lads at the back an easy time! Dream zzzzzzzzzzzz

Tre,
There's a fairly extensive discussion on Da Silva on the "2+2=7" thread - including a comprehensive assessment of the kid by Stevo. He plays for Stevo's local team.

Stevo says he been playing CB recently, because of injuries to other players and has done well there, but he seems to be a right-sided m/f player. Appears to be highly versatile.
