Hey Jim! Can I ask a favor?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

I have a good friend that I'd like to invite to the forum, if I send you her e-mail addy, could you sent her a link for here? Or could you send me the link again and I will forward it to her? I would have forwarded the first one you sent me, but lost it when I switched computers.

I didn't e-mail you to ask this 'cause I remembered that there was something weird about your addy having to do with being the moderator, but couldn't remember what it was and couldn't find it.

Thanks!

Computer illiterate me...I am trying to figure out if there is some way to post a picture that a friend sent me in an email....? I haven't a clue how to go about it, but it's one that I think a lot of people on this site would enjoy, entitled What Sheepdogs Do For Fun. Oh heck, maybe people have already seen it, but I thought it was hilarious.

-- Anonymous, June 12, 2001

julie: Try the *photo album* link I posted above. You should be able to upload your picture there and then let us all know about it here on our forum.

If you need help I'll try and help you tomorrow with it but I gotta go now as we've been having major lightning tonight and I can't stay online much longer tonight.

See you all tomorrow...

Jim just saw the 2 cross stich picts. Beautiful!! What is a cross stich anyway?.....Kirk

-- Anonymous, June 12, 2001

Ack! Jim, I did the upload (never did one before), and when it finished, it told me that it had uploaded to a private album! >:-[ I'll bet you can fix it, but SORRY!

Kirk, cross-stitch is sort of a form of embroidery. The stitch is done on fabric that has a very even weave, and each cross stitch is worked with a diagonal stitch one way / and then another back the other way \ so that you end up with a X. The thread crosses over, so it is "cross-stitch".

Wow, Ruth must really LOVE to do cross-stitch! Those are a LOT work - - thousands of stitches. I'm not that patient, although I know how to cross-stitch. They are beautiful, though!

-- Anonymous, June 13, 2001

Thank You Joy!

Jim: how long did it take Ruth to complete those master-pieces? If you have the time could you get more of a close-up on those pictures?....kirk

-- Anonymous, June 13, 2001

Never mind Jim I got the close-up. Come on Kirk follow the instructions!!! Duh.....Kirk

-- Anonymous, June 13, 2001

The cross stitch are absolutly beautiful! Amazing also. The sheepdog picture is not there anywhere that I could find, I want to see it.

-- Anonymous, June 13, 2001

No problem, Joy. I'm finding that the Bravenet photo album is a little tricky to use. For some reason, I have to approve pics after you guys upload them and before anyone else can see them. I've tried to find where to change this "feature" but can't see to find it.

Oh well, I did move the picture into a new folder called *Humorous Pics*. It sure is funny! I've never seen it before so thanks for uploading it! I think you all should be able to see it now, too.

I'll let Ruth know that you guys like her cross stitching. She has a couple others like this one - I'll upload them sometime soon so you can see them, too. And I definitely need to delete those two pictures and upload smaller, optimized versions - it took me forever to view them because of their large file sizes...

One of her other projects won Grand Champion in the County Fair a couple years ago. I'm trying to talk her into entering this one, too as I think it would be a sure win (the digital pictures I took don't do it justice). All of her cross stitching projects over the last several years have been Paula Vaughn prints in case any of you are Paula Vaughn fans.

As for how long it takes, that depends on where we're living at the time. That cross stitch took her about a year with her working on it *every* day.

She has one now that she's been working on for a couple of years but the reason it's taking so long to finish is because we're now back living in the country so she doesn't have anywhere near the same amount of time to devote to it.

BTW, let me know if you can't see Joy and Julie's picture.

-- Anonymous, June 13, 2001

I just optimized Ruth's cross stitch pictures and also uploaded 4 additional pictures of her work. I was able to get the file sizes down from approximately 300 KB to 80-90 KB. They should load much better now...

-- Anonymous, June 13, 2001

I saw the dog, funny, looks like a coyote. But now I can't see Joy and Julie's pictues anywhere.

-- Anonymous, June 13, 2001

Cindy: Here is a direct link to the picture:

http://pub29.bravenet.com/photocenter/vie w.php?img=2105&usernum=2413240385

The sheepdog picture was the only one that Joy & Julie uploaded. Sorry if I confused you into thinking there were other pictures.

-- Anonymous, June 13, 2001

BTW, I'm glad that sheepdog has plenty of elevation while leaping over that sheep. If he was any lower in relation to that sheep's backside the picture could be interpreted in a WHOLE 'nother way! LOL!

-- Anonymous, June 13, 2001

Yes Jim, you did confuse me. I was all ready to see a picture of the famous Mob Boss's twin daughters! Twins in Trenchcoats. he he he

-- Anonymous, June 14, 2001

Cindy, I thought the dog looked very wolf or coyote-like too. I think this is a created picture, but it's still hilarious!

So now we're the Mob Bosses kids?! Actually, our dad and brother went on some fishing trip (this was years ago), and it was two days before some of the folks realized that they were father and son (my brother takes after mom's side of the family in looks). Then one of the other guys on the trip commented that they thought Dad was a mob boss and Brother was his bodyguard/enforcer!

It's really hilarious if you knew their personalities (both rather shy and quiet). I guess Brother was staying behind Dad, getting his luggage, and generally taking care of him. Which was nice of him, but since Dad was still quite hale and hearty and muscular then, I can see why they might wonder what was up! LOL!

-- Anonymous, June 14, 2001

My turn to ask a favor! :) I just uploaded a picture of myself and Keith to the website. I'm a total computer illiterate, can you make the file smaller so it will load faster or is that something that I have to do? Thanks!

-- Anonymous, June 14, 2001

Sherri: I got an email notice from Bravenet that you'd uploaded a picture (that happens whenever someone other than me uploads a picture) so of course I had to go and check it out. :-)

The size of your file is only 35 KB so I don't think you need to make it any smaller - it loaded just fine for me (Ruth's cross stitch pictures are 80 KB or larger in comparison to yours so yours is just fine, IMO).

BTW, Ruth and I agree: You guys make a cute couple! :-D

-- Anonymous, June 14, 2001

Wow, pictures! I didn't know about this, Jim. Expect something from me soon (if I can figure out how to do it), as I now have a little digital camera to play with.

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2001

Cool! What did you get, Sam?

BTW, I'm incredibly envious of you right now as I still have to rely on a loaner camera to take digital pictures. But I'm hoping to buy one this coming Winter if funds are sufficient...

I just read in Time or Newsweek that 5 megapixel cameras are now hitting the market so the 3 megapixel models should now come down in price. I can't wait to get one!

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2001

OK, I was very very brave and uploaded a pic of Steve and I. Now you guys be nice, your turn will come around! Yeah, I know, I robbed the cradle, I got a young one, but he can lift heavy things and he's tops in construction so, hey, what can I say! He's been 6 years in training with me and he's turning out pretty good at this frugal homesteading way of life now. Now come on, it's you all's turn, let's see what'cha look like.

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2001

Hey, and Jim, don't be drawing no mustaches on me before you put the picture up either you hear!

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2001

Another cute couple!

http://pub29.bravenet.com/photocenter/view.php? img=2394&usernum=2413240385

Hey, and Jim, don't be drawing no mustaches on me before you put the picture up either you hear!

Darn! And here I was all ready to doodle on your face, Cindy - give you a big handle-bar mustache and blacken out a couple teeth, maybe a goatee... It would have looked great! I promise! :-D

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2001

o.k., I got brave and did my first "up-load". It was the only photo I have had taken in years. Will try and get someone to take one of Gary and I sometime.

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2001

Jim, what I have here is an Olympus Camedia D-360L, 1.3 megapixel. Rose bought it so she could sell on eBay (she's still buying, but hasn't got around to selling - but we won't go there). It's pocket- size, can focus to within 4 inches, takes great pictures. For my purposes, I wouldn't want more resolution. It IS a little complex - I still keep the instruction manual handy. Lots of choices.

I just uploaded two snapshots of our garden. I tried reducing the size considerably - we'll see how this works.

It's nice to be able to get instant results, and to be able to tinker with the images (though I have a lot to learn about that). One of the hats I wear is an artist's beret, and I was recently asked to do a pen & ink illustration of a rare crayfish. I was offered 3 live specimens as models. With this little camera, I took a dozen or so pictures, selected the best 2, brightened & sharpened the images, printed them out, and by the next day had a drawing. So much easier than trying to work from a wet, wriggling critter!

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2001

diane: I got an email notice that you had tried to upload a picture but it had failed. Give it another try, hopefully it will work the second time around.

Sam: A similar thing happended with your pictures, although the descriptions of your two pictures did get uploaded (one is titled "Garden with Shelby the Wonder Dog" and the other is called "Another corner of the garden".

When I view where your pictures should be I get this message:

There is a problem with the image headers in this picture. To resolve this, open the picture in your graphics program and resave it. This may also reduce the filesize of your image.

You can use the "edit image" option to re-upload this image once you have fixed it

Good luck in your second attempt, guys.

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2001

BTW Sam, I hear good things about the Olympus Camedia D-360L. And you're right, 1.3 megapixel is just fine for Internet work.

And I did mention I was envious, didn't I? ;-)

P.S.- I hope you take some pictures of your pen & ink illustrations if you have time. I would love to see your work and I imagine others here on the forum would, too.

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2001

Hmmmmm. I thought I posted something here. Maybe I hit "back" instead of 'submit'. Anyway, I uploaded a pic of me. Someone else scanned it and posted it for me last year (on a different board). All that picture producing stuff is still beyond my skill level (so far!). I don't think Julie has one on the web anywhere, so you'll have to do without viewing her! Unless she's been holding out on me . . . .

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2001

Joy: You did post something over on the Party Animals!! thread about your picture... Is that what you were talking about?

BTW, I like your picture - it's really nice to finally put a face with your written word. :-)

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2001

diane: Your picture uploaded successfully. I did have to compress it significantly, though. The original file size was over 500 KB (a REAL whopper!), but I was able to get it down to under 80 KB with no detectable differences.

That's a great picture of you and the goat!

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2001

Jim, I don't know how to do that, compress, would I change the setting at the time of scanning?? I am obviously doing something wrong when I scan as I always end up with these huge files.

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2001

Oh Jim, I forgot to say please tell Ruth I am an total awe of her cross-stitch!!! Thanks everyone for posting photos. I think it is so neat to put faces on people that you feel like you are starting to get to know. Come on everyone........put them on there. If I can, you can.

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2001

diane:

Jim, I don't know how to do that, compress, would I change the setting at the time of scanning?? I am obviously doing something wrong when I scan as I always end up with these huge files.

Gee diane, I wish I could help you with that but I don't own a scanner so I know virtually nothing about them. I use a program called Ulead SmartSaver Pro which is a program made specifically to make pictures load faster on the Internet. I saved a copy of your picture to my computer and then chose *optimize* after opening SmartSaver Pro. It then brought up side-by-side images so I could compare picture quality while fiddling with the compressed image.

Here's a little bit about the program:

Ulead SmartSaver Pro is the premiere web-graphics optimization tool. With it, you can squeeze away the extra weight from your images and make them web-ready in minutes. They'll load faster (in some cases by as much as 200%) and you won't lose visitors to your site because the download time for your pages is too long.

SmartSaver lets you open images in variety of image file formats and then optimize them. You can adjust the quality and compression settings of the image so that you can create a smaller file with better quality, and then save it as one of the three most common web image file formats: GIF, JPG or PNG. In addition to saving images, SmartSaver lets you slice them, automatically generating the appropriate HTML table code for you, so that larger images load faster. SmartSaver also assists you in creating interactive HTML- based image maps. Generate any shape hotspots over your images in seconds, even across sliced image cells, and then output the corresponding HTML code to either a file or the Windows clipboard.

Ulead SmartSaver Pro

Oh, wait a minute - Ruth is sitting here next to me, telling me how you might compress it the file...

Ruth says that you can resize your image after it's scanned, which might make the file smaller. That's about the extent of her knowledge with scanners but give it a try and it might work for you.

Oh Jim, I forgot to say please tell Ruth I am an total awe of her cross-stitch!!! Thanks everyone for posting photos. I think it is so neat to put faces on people that you feel like you are starting to get to know. Come on everyone........put them on there. If I can, you can.

Ruth says THANKS! She just loves to cross stitch - she says she likes doing it because it uses the non-technical part of her brain. She comes home pretty burnt out from working with computers all day so gardening and cross stitching are two of the ways she "decompresses" after work.

BTW, I don't have any pictures of me to put up at this time - I've never really had an interest in having my picture taken. But I will make an attempt to get a picture taken in the next month or so and upload it to the Photo Album. I just need to get Ruth to bring home the digital camera from work sometime soon...

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2001

Loved seeing the pictures!

On the scanner, you should be able to choose the size. Do Scan Preview first, then make a square in the picture where you want it cropped (click in the pic and drag the little box corners), it won't scan the rest of the pic in. Then there should be a Slect where you want the scan to go (a photo editing program hopefully), and Select Output size. You can choose 50% of the origional size. Youre's should have this stuff on it. What kind is it. You can go to the scanner homepage and get help info also. Or click on the Help on the program.

200 resolution should be fine for what we are doing here. For web graphics and such we use 400, but it does make massive pics that have to be resized down. BUT, they can be blown up and still look good.

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2001

OK, I put in a picture of myself with my favorite goat, Reflex. Diane, it was really neat to be able to see what you look like! A disclaimer- that is not a very good picture of me, but it was the only one I could find for now.

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2001

Jim

I'm going to try to upload those garden pictures.Never done this, but I'll follow Cindy's instructions.

I have one of Nick on Rowdy that I like alot too.

And,I don't have many of me either,bc I'm the one that takes all the pictures.

I'll have to take some with the tripod and timer in the next few weeks.Maybe where something is flowering.

I don't know how these will look on the web, so this is an experiment for me.The first time I tried to send a picture in email,I spend all day on it.Literally.But I was not going to give up! Of course, now I've forgotten what I did, so I may be here all night long!

Oh wow,it's already pretty late.I may do this tomorrow.

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2001

Yeah, that was it, Jim -- I got confused, obviously! Somedays that is easier than others!

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2001

Well, read the scanner program (when in doubt read directions) and see that I can actually select file size. My default was set at the largest size because that was the best quality photo save. For the web I will just change the setting........thanks all. If I were not messing around with the forums all the time since I got my computer maybe I would know more about it!!! Rebekah, you don't look 28 at all, more like a teenager..........lucky you, someday you will love it that you look younger than you are!!! You would never know it to look at me now, but I got carded until I was 35. More photos folks, I love seeing you all.

-- Anonymous, June 16, 2001

Well,Jim.I sent out five pictures this AM.Did you get them?

I've got a couple more of the garden area but I'll wait to see if this worked.Did they need resized or were they all right?

The one of me is not too recent, from our house in PA,so I'll have to take one here.I need to finish off the roll of film on flowers, anyway.

Well,Nick and Rowdy's isn't too recent either, but he looks exactly the same.He never changes. He's immortal.

-- Anonymous, June 16, 2001

Sharon,

Nope, nothing came through. You must have tried to upload about 5 pictures because that's the number of emails I received from Bravenet notification. But each email stated that the upload had failed. I wish it would say WHY they failed so I could help you but they didn't.

I wish I could give you some advice on what to do differently. I guess all you can do is give it another try. Good luck.

Oh, make sure your photo files are in jpg or jpeg format as I don't think any other format will work in Bravenet's photo album.

-- Anonymous, June 16, 2001

Thanks Jim.I'll try later. Hmmmm....

diane.. what did you have to do to get your to load?

-- Anonymous, June 16, 2001

Ok Jim I emailed you a picture.Did that one come thru?

Cindy or whomever.I have these two options... to scan & to email on my task bar that pops up for the scanner. I've been using the email option and I don't get that image viewer you talk about.I do when I use scan tho.Do I need to use scan to post on Jim's site, instead of the email option? Is that the problem maybe?

-- Anonymous, June 16, 2001

Sharon,

Yep, I got the emailed picture just fine. But you guys are so small in the picture that I can hardly see ya.

The gardens in the foreground look nice and I like the stone path.

Looking forward to more pictures...

-- Anonymous, June 16, 2001

Sam,

I got notice that you tried to upload you photos again. The email said it was a success but when I went to Bravenet there were no pictures. I got the same message as last time:

There is a problem with the image headers in this picture. To resolve this, open the picture in your graphics program and resave it. This may also reduce the filesize of your image.

You can use the "edit image" option to re-upload this image once you have fixed it.

I'm really puzzled as to why this is happening to you...

-- Anonymous, June 16, 2001

Sharon, you need to scan them in and save them in your computer like "My Documents" or C:/Pictures. If you don't have a Picture file, make one. Double click "My Computer", then double click "C", and find on top "New Folder", and make you one, Pictures. Remember what you name the photos when you save them, so you will know later. Write down what name they are and where you put them.

In the upload site, click on "Browse". Then open the tiny box next to the location (place in your PC) bar, and open "C" or "My Documents", whichever place you put them. Find the picture, click on it and then Open. And click the button. That should do it. Let me know what you don't understand.

Open up your scanner and see something for me. On the scanner program, go to FILE, on the top, and then see if it has AQUIRE. If it does, it has a picture editing program. Took me forever to figure that out on the scanner I borrowed from my son before I got me one. I have to go outside and put up the tomatoe fence, but I'll check back in often. Love ya.

-- Anonymous, June 16, 2001

BTW, I wanted to let you all know that I won't be online again until late Sunday. The weather is finally dry here and I've got too much outdoor work to get done before the next rain system moves through.

So, if you upload any pictures to the photo album, be aware that they won't show up for everyone to see until I get back online and approve them. I wish Bravenet would allow me to change this "feature" so people could freely upload without me always having to approve them. (grumble)

Oh well, just wanted to let you all know where I'd be...

P.S. - The rain here has been PHENOMENAL! We got another 3 inches this week. The near-by river has overflowed its banks and flooded the surrounding fields - when we drove over the bridge to go to town it was SCARY how the river was raging. One elderly gentleman said that he hasn't seen this much rain and flooding in his entire life (he's in his 70's). A lot of farmers can't get in to work their fields and those that have gotten things planted have lost a lot of it to flooding. I guess the little bit of water in my basement is pretty minor compared to what others have been going through...

-- Anonymous, June 16, 2001

Cindy,

Thanks for helping people figure out this stuff, I appreciate it.

-- Anonymous, June 16, 2001

Cindy thanks for your help & will get back to you.Picked roses, elderflowers ,mullien roadside and now need to spread them out on screens for drying.Pleasant task on a pleasant day. Typing while eating.

Jim -It's 'cause we are just wee little people here in this magical place. That was for the garden view mostly.Have others. Thanks, to you too. Enjoy the dry day. You're really earning them, this year.

-- Anonymous, June 16, 2001

Did you figure out how scan, you guys? I kept checking in yesterday, havn't seen any more questions.

I wore myself out, I am hurtin for certin! Did field fence ALL day. 2 more rolls to do today, Steve is taking off so we can get it done. I made the most delecious yellow butter yesterday in the blender with the cream from Ginger! Man is it good, and easy to do to.

Anyway, let me know what you are still having problems with. I wanna see some more pictures!

-- Anonymous, June 18, 2001

Cindy ...I looked for Acquire but did not find it.This setup has Image Viewer and has all sorts of things to change the picture,so I guess that is what you are talking about.I found out how to see what size a picture is and how to resize it,so I'm alright there, now. Next,I need to check each one and see what size it is.

Now I'll see if I can figure out the second half.I worked on scanning a bunch in, but when I told Nick what I was doing, he has temporarily nixed me posting anything that has a recent face on it.He said it could be used to make up a fake ID.He's going to think about it,but I can post Garden and distance photos so I'll try to do that sometime this week.Busy tho as you can imagine. Flowers needing picked again, and raspberries.

Hey there is a Folk Art gathering here that is little known to outsiders but well attended at the end of the month.Local artist has it at her place.Free setup. She'swell known and draws people in apparently. My one friend told me about it. Are you looking for places to sell hubbie's carvings?

Anyway,I was using the email icon instead of scan. I must use scan. That was the first problem.

Jim,I checked the size of that picture,I figured out how to do that, and it WAS that big,so I have now reduced it. Untelling why it was so large.

Gotta run

-- Anonymous, June 18, 2001

Yikes! Photo ID's?! Diane and Rebekah are probably safe, no one would believe that a photo ID would include a goat . . . . But what about the rest of us. Well, Sherri and Keith are probably safe too, with the "bunny ears" . . . . .

-- Anonymous, June 18, 2001

How about Cindy and Steve as siamese twins attached at the belly??? That would work.

-- Anonymous, June 18, 2001

Oh my ...'paranoia strikes deep'.......has Nicky always been like this, or did he get it from you? I expect if I EXPECT all these terrible things'll happen to me, they most likely will.

Love seeing the pix; I'm almost always wrong when I picture people, but I had Rebeckah and Diane pretty right on. What a great looking crew! And dear Diane, whom I know better than most in this place, looks just as sweet and lovely and deeply thoughtful as I imagined.

Blessings,

Yuck it up.Come talk to me after your credit card's been maxed out(my stepson had that done via computer) and someone bought a car with your idenity(program on hachers on PBS a while back).

Don't you people read the papers?(yuk, yuk, yuk) Don't get out much, anymore,do you? Better wake up and take a look around you. You're not in Kansas anymore. Welcome to the 21st century.Enjoy.

Sorry, sweetie, a bigger news junkie than me dont exist! I am not the one amongst us who lives in the hills, or caves, under the covers, or beneath a cloud, or just got off the burro, or off the ship, fell off the cart, or whateva.

Although I will admit that I havent hung around inmates much, no!

What I DO believe absolutely, fwiw, is that what we FOCUS on is what we ATTRACT. peer eee ooooo eye did....it works every time, without fail....be it negative or positive.......its always about energy........

I know, i know....... I live a charmed life.......I've just been damned lucky.....yada yada.......which is why I've never (yeah, i know, knock wood):

been assaulted in any shape or form, in all the myriad places I have lived for 52 years....

never been robbed, ripped off in any major way, been a victim of a natural/unnatural disaster;

except for a short period in my youth, have always been blessed with an abundance of EVERYTHING!!!!!!!

But that was after I discovered I was wonderful and marvelous and talented and all that sorta stuff (and so was everyone else!), and discarded all the rot about being 'born in sin'.

No, never was in Kansas, actually, but still occurs to me that althoug I surely agree I still have alot to learn (thank goddess!), so do we all, grasshoppers........

Well actually Diane, Steve and I could be closer than we think. His family was on the Kentucky side of the mountains and mine was on the West Virginia side, not a far mule ride really!!!! His neice looks just like me when I was her age.
