Jun 12, 2001, (Algemeen Dagblad /FT World Media Abstracts via COMTEX) -- For the first time, more than 100 billion kWh of electricity was used in the Netherlands last year. Dutch statistics office CBS reported that since 1990, energy consumption by households has risen by 32 per cent, due to increased use of electrical equipment.

Although consumers bought more electrical products such as microwave ovens, washing machines and electrical can openers, these products have become more energy efficient. Electricity use by the industrial sector has risen by 22 per cent since 1990.
