Newcastle closing in on yet more strikers.

United have made a bid of £8million for the Everton frontman and are waiting to discuss personal terms over a proposed £35,000-a-week salary over five years. England Under-21 star Jeffers is currently away on holiday and United will have to wait to speak to him but Bobby Robson has a striker on his summer shopping list and plenty of other names have been placed in the frame. Belgian international Emile Mpenza, who was linked to the club last summer has been mentioned as an £8million target, while Anderlecht hitman Tomasz Radzinski has also been linked. Radzinski grabbed 22 goals last season for the Belgian champions Anderlecht and he is rated in the £4million bracket.

And I didn't ADD the bit about Mpenza.

I cut it short Mac as I didn't want to depress myself. Also on Bobby Robsons summer shopping list is Blackburn Rovers hot shot Matt Jansen. The 23 year old who last season netted 23 goals for the "woodies" is still highly regarded by both Billy Robson and his Town Army followers, but Souness is unlikely to sell , even at the rumoured price of £16.25 million.

you made up that 'million' bit at the end didn't you

I am depressed. Is it only me that feels we need a whole new midfield.

Our midfield needs a complete overhaul. I like Mpenza. He looked class when I saw him. Very mobile, knew where the goal was and created for others.

And the number of world class Belgians are...? :-) Mpenza got away with a handball and I thought looked no more than ok. I remain to be convinced on his merits

Phillipe Albert was never 'World Class' but he was good enough for us!

-- Anonymous, June 13, 2001

Highly debatable - I think I could put forward a fairly convincing argument that The Prince was absolutely world-class.

I know Albert was great for us, but even if Clarky makes the case for him being world class (I have my doubts) that still makes a grand total of 1 Belgian.

The point I laboured to make is that Mpenza does not IMO have what it takes and would dissappoint us all. Being Belgian doesn't help either :-)

Most certainly at £12.5 million Mpenza is way, way over-priced - but this has nowt at all to do with him being Belgian. He'd be a canny buy at say £5 million.
BTW, Enzo Scifo wasn't too bad a Belgian player.

I saw Scifo at 18 play for (cheating bastards) Anderlecht against Forest in the 84 UEFA Cup semi-final. Big build-up for the lad, one of the reasons for going along, had to say he was crap, which is why I'm not a football scout.

Mpenza was excellent in the last world cup. He's had a couple of great seasons helping Shalke into the runners up spot of the Bundesleage. Last year he was valued at around £7 m, but we got Cort instead. This year he's valued at over £10 m, but I doubt that he would swap the Champions league for the mid table mediocrity in the PL.
