Defender Aaron Hughes insists Newcastle must turn St James' Park into a fortress again if they are to challenge for honours next season. The 21-year-old Northern Ireland international and his team-mates went down to five Premiership defeats on home soil last term - all against teams who finished outside the top six. Little wonder Hughes says: "For me, it's all about consistency. If we had won our home games we would have been pushing for a place in Europe. "It has been a massive learning experience for me because there have been so many highs and lows. "We won some big games but we also lost some which we were expected to do well in.

Just plain fecking complacent then? Surely after a few horrendous defeats it would tell you that you weren't as good as you thought you were?

As much as new players would improve the team, as well as a consistently fit team, a lot needs to be done in the way they think about matches.
