6-hour urban rogaine in Kansas City

greenspun.com : LUSENET : orienteer kansas : One Thread

Eric Saggars is apparently planning an unofficial 6-hour urban rogaine training in Kansas City. It is being coordinated through the KC adventure racing e-group. He plans to use the 1:24000 USGS map.

The date is not yet set (when it is I'll post something on the forum). It looks like it will be sometime during mid-July or early August.

It sounds like it'd be a fun event.

As I get more details, I'll post them.

Oog. I feel the energy draining out of me just thinking about runningaround in those humid city temperatures...

I have set the date for this urban rogaine for Sunday July 22nd starting at 5:50 AM. I will give out the start location approx. July 16th.

I am considering making the course available to those that couldn't make that date. If you want to do it on your own sometime after July 22nd: get the map, do the course within the time limit, and then submit your score to me. I will post all scores to an urban rogaine Webpage.

I would like to order the maps before I go on vacation, so if you need a map it would be appreciated if you could send me a check by June 28th, for $5, (to cover the cost of the topo map). Email me to get my address.

It was a good time for all, but it got very warm and uncomfortable too early. There are a few people who plan on doing this event on their own, (Gene and Fritz, I am mailing you your USGS maps today!)

If someone is still interested in seeing the course and possibly doing it themselves, let me know and I will mail you a B/W copy of the map with controls. The course can be done anytime, but Sunday morning was quite nice due to lack of traffic and people about.

The final results of the urban rogaine are below. Max. points possible = 2810 over 59 controls.

6 hour division:

Bob M.: 1890 pts, time on course = 5:53, points per hour = 321 Eric S.: 1820 pts, TOC = 5:02 , PPH = 361, (unofficial as being course setter has some advantages!) Keith L.: 1780 pts, TOC = 5:51, PPH = 304 Charlie M.: 1770 pts, TOC = 4:29, PPH = 395 Karen S.: 1500 pts, TOC = 4:30, PPH = 333

3 hour division: Jerry I.: 650 pts, TOC = 2:59, PPH = 216

It would be quite interesting when all is said and done to see the course posted online somewhere, perhaps with somebody's route on it.
