Airplane Crash Kills Three People in North Carolina; Pilot Reported Electrical Problem The Associated Press Published: Jun 6, 2001MONROE, N.C. (AP) - A plane crash Wednesday killed three people, police said. The small plane, bound for Jacksonville, N.C., took off from the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport on Wednesday afternoon.
The pilot radioed the Charlotte-Douglas tower soon afterward to report an electrical problem and asked for permission to land at the Monroe Airport, police said.
The plane then went off the tower's radar screen, authorities said. The downed plane was found in Monroe, about 25 miles southeast of Charlotte, Monroe Police Chief Bobby Haulk said.
A police dispatcher confirmed that at least three people were dead. No names were released. Federal Aviation Administration investigators arrived at the crash site late Wednesday.
A witness, Tim Marlowe of Monroe, said he saw the plane soar up and plummet out of control before the crash.
"It just blew up when it hit the ground," Marlowe said. "It was a ball of flames."
