70-200 f/2.8 IS???

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

I have heard rumours about an IS version of Canon's 70-200 f/2.8, and while I doubt that i would be able to afford it, it might mean the non-stabilized version would be rendered "obsolete" and come down in price. (Of course, by obsolete i only mean not cutting edge technology...it would still be a great lens.) Anyone know if Canon will release this lens in the near future?

"I have heard rumours..." - So have I. A lot of them. But they are just rumors.

"Anyone know if Canon will release this lens in the near future?" - Yes, there are people that know, but they would loose their jobs if they told anyone. Simply put, Canon aint talkin' and all the rumors about this lens and several others are totally unconfirmed.

I have heard two rumors, both from normally reliable sources.

(1) An EF70-200/2.8L IS is in the works and will be released soon - in fact it's surprising that it wasn't announced at PMA in February.

(2) Rumor #1 is unfounded and Canon has no plans to introduce a 70-200/2.8L IS anytime soon.

Take your pick.
