Steh Johnson to Rangers?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

I've said it many a time before but this lad is class, and will only get better. He would be a great acquisition and if Derby are prepared to listen to offers I suggest Bobby gets on the phone to his old baldy pal Jim now.

From TTB...

Rangers eyeing Rams midfielder ^top

Glasgow Rangers are lining up a summer swoop for Derby midfielder Seth Johnson although Rams boss Jim Smith is hoping to keep him at Pride Park. The Scottish giants have been linked with a move for the England Under-21 star for some time now but have upped their interest since the season ended. Johnson was bought as part of Jim Smith's policy of building for the future with young British players and is not one that he would wish to part with. The club's bank is, however, keen to see that overdraft facilities are not exceeded and The Rams could be forced to sell to placate them. Unfortunately, as with all clubs, the players that you want to keep are the very ones that gain covetous glances from elsewhere. Smith told the Derby Evening Telegraph that feelers had been put out during the season with a view to The Gers making a summer swoop. "Rangers are coming back now but I am keen to keep Seth. But I also recognise, in our situation, that Rangers might make a bid that we'd find impossible to refuse," Smith said. "Seth is one of the young players who helped us through last season and he has gained experience from two tough campaigns. We would like to be able to use that to our advantage. While we need to add experienced players, successful relegation battles helped the current squad to develop."

Excellent young player - and also one we should have bought from Crewe before Derby did for £3mm, ie peanuts.

Aye, we should go for Johnson.

It would look a bit strange to find that we'd signed Francis and Seth though, not really common names for 21 year olds.

Johnson has the same dynamic m/f style as Gerrard and Viera - and he's only 21. He'd be a fantastic signing for us.

Yup i'm with this one....we should at least give Rangers a run for their money....

We've missed a nut in midfield since Barry. How much is Johnson going for?

Whats happening with Prutton?

-- Anonymous, June 07, 2001

Prutton is too expensive for such an inexperienced player. Johnson is a totally different matter.

Rangers are angry that Derby revelaed their interest and are not interested in getting into a public auction for the player.

They want players who want to play for Rangers, stung by mercenary foreigners? Join the queue!

I have to admit that I've been flumoxed(!) at the level of interest on here in Seth Johnson. I realise he came out of Dario Gradi's Crewe stable but every time I've seen him he's flattered to deceive. Shirt untucked, socks rolled down, lacking in pace, not particularly creative with either foot, another one in the 'precocious young talent' bin perhaps - most of who never make it out.

So what do others see that I don't that makes him worth several million of our hard-earned ??

terrific left foot, good attitude and can win the ball. If Robson sees no other way of playing than with a central midfeilder on the left wing then this lad is the one.

skinhead?

I guess that partly sums up my concerns DeB. Wide or creative midfield player Johnson certainly ain't - at least not from what I've seen. Also I've rarely seen him hit a good long pass for someone rumoured to have a sweet left foot. Do we really need to spend serious dosh on yet another midfielder doing work off the ball ?

Ditto my confusion with people falling over themselves now that Appy Arry has left Wham and Carrick may be available. He's never looked a particularly creative player to me either. Mainly someone who likes shooting from outside the box - a lot.

Petit, available for a cut price 6 mil from Barca would be a terrific player to get, IF he could shut up and get on with it...

Christ we need someone who can shoot from outside the box. Opposition defences must look at our midfield and think all they have to do is take care of the strikers and there is no further threat to goal from open play.

We have plenty of central midfielders but all much of a muchness. Carrick's passing is exemplary and he can do all the hard stuff too, miles ahead and more rounded than anything we currently have at the club.

I wouldn't say miles deb, but there is no question as to what you say. Carrick is a future star of the England midfield, i like him. In fact he'd be my prime target if i was bobby, or is that billy now?

one from Murray... RANGERS chairman David Murray has said that the Scottish giants will not get involved in an auction for Derby`s England international Seth Johnson. Rams manager Jim Smith admitted on Wednesday that Rangers had been sniffing around Johnson and a bid could be very hard to turn down.

However, despite acknowledging an interest in the player, the Ibrox supremo did reveal that he was annoyed that Derby made their interest public.

20-year-old Johnson is certainly high on The Gers` summer shopping list, but as Murray explains it will not be a one horse race for the former Crewe ace.

"I know others are interested in Johnson but I will not get involved in an auction," said Murray.

"We want people who want to play for Rangers. "We have definitely made an inquiry about this player, but no bid has been made.

"It is totally up to Dick Advocaat whether or not we follow up that inquiry with a concrete offer for the player. We are currently looking at all our options in terms of strengthening the squad.

"They have told us how much they want for him and we have still to get back to them.

"I am disappointed it has come into the public arena.

"Other than that I have nothing more to say."

There are belived to be a host of Premiership clubs interested in Johnson and they are likely to mount bids to keep the youngster in England.

Meanwhile, Murray dismissed claims that he was interestred in Sturm Graz ace Markus Schopp.

The Austrian international`s agent said his client would like a move to Ibrox, but Murray said: "We have no interest in Schopp whatsoever,"

hhmmm, Leicester per cahnce?
