Softies in Europe:a mirror of black and white?

WEDNESDAY JUNE 06 2001 'Softies' eye draw for Uefa Cup place BY OUR SPORTS STAFF JIMMY CALDERWOOD, the Dunfermline Athletic manager, has labelled his side “too soft” even though their good disciplinary record could win them a place in Europe. The side will be entered into the draw today for a place in the qualifying round of next season’s Uefa Cup after finishing second in Scotland’s Fair Play table. Celtic topped the list, but have already claimed a place in the Champions League, which means Dunfermline have the chance to join Shakhtior Soligorsk, of Belarus, who have already qualified for the Uefa Cup via the Fair Play ranking.

But Barry Nicholson, the midfield player, insisted Calderwood would like to see the East End Park side toughen up in future. “In a way it’s good that we have this disciplinary record, but I think the manager thinks we can be a bit too soft at times.

“He’s disappointed that we don’t get stuck into teams enough, but the other side of it is that this is really good for the club and the manager.”
