One of `Vieques Four' ends hunger strike

NEW YORK -- (AP) -- City Councilman Adolfo Carrion Junior, one of four men in a Brooklyn prison for protesting U.S. Naval bombing exercises on the Puerto Rican island of Vieques, has ended his hunger strike.

He says he has to stay strong to fulfill his city council duities.

Carrion, the Reverend Al Sharpton, Bronx Democratic Party chairman Roberto Ramirez and State Assemblyman Jose Rivera were jailed for a May 1 protest. They were trying to stop the Navy from bombing on Vieques.

Sharpton was sentenced to 90 days; the others got 40 days.

Sharpton completed his sixth day on hunger strike Sunday.
