Putty Sticks

When reglazing a window, the final step involves applying the putty (glazing compound) to seal the juncture of glass and sash. Some like to hold the putty in their hand and squish it in with their thumb, while others roll out putty snakes and lay them in place before smoothing them out with a putty knife. Here is another method: Flatten out a ball of putty to a thickness of about 3/8" and cut off sections about 3/8" wide. These putty sticks can then be laid in place and smoothed as usual. This method also can be applied to plumbers' putty when installing a sink.

Now if there was just an easy way to re-putty 2nd floor windows that have aluminum storms on the outside......

Not an easy one, Beckie, good luck on that one.

I did the putty snakes when I redid the little window panes in the Norfolk house. Leave your bits of putty in a warm place for a while to soften up (like in the sun, not near a water heater, I think that stuff is flammable, can't remember)--makes the snakes easier to roll and apply. Got to be careful when chipping out the old putty too. And a putty knife is absolutely essential for making a professional-looking smooth bevel on the putty.
