Kilbane?

Suprisingly, Kilbane would not be top of my list, or even the debatable Darren Williams - both are still young and will improve. Kilbane is a bit 1 dimensional beating the full-back but his shooting and crossing are decent and he tackles back. Williams isn't quite good enough for the premiership but he's versatile and fit which makes him worth c.3 other squad players.

I would definitely off-load some of the long-term stiffs to lighten the pay-load - top of the list: eg Proctor, Wainwright, Lumsden, Nunez.

The others should stay, to add depth to the squad, but if we were forced to sell to buy I would maybe off-load Schwarz and Varga. Schwarz is top class, but slow, a bit too defensive and seems to attract an automatic first team place too much - I think most of us would rather have a perm of Rae, McCann and/or Hutchison in the centre. Varga has real godlike presence but he is shaky at times - Craddock and Thome = less fuss and more effective. Varga also has a worrying tendency to make professional fouls.

Careful ML3. Postings like that could make people think there actually aren't that many differences among the lot of us.

What I'd be interested to know is, which of your players would you get shot of even though they seem to get rave notices most games they play ?

To start the ball rolling, two of ours, who IMHO are grafters and little else, are Barton and Speed. Wouldn't bother me one ioatum (or more precisely, two iota) if they didn't play for us again, the reasoning being, while they're available, there isn't as much pressure to find acceptible replacements.

Anderson shelter here I come, and I ain't coming out till the all clear siren's gone off. :-))

I was talking to a maKem a few weeks ago and they actually rate Speed and Barton. I asked him to list in order the players that they would want. He said Dyer, then Shearer and Solano , but then added maybe Speed, Barton and your keepers, for our reserves.

I can understand that. Our experience of Speed and Barton is limited to derby games, and they always seem "up for it". Speed looks decent for Wales as well.

Varga and Schwarz are both popular and highly rated Bill, so they would fall into that category.

My reply to his "who would you not mind from Sunderland " was. Hoolio Arca Don Hutchison and possibly Kilbane. If we needed a keeper then Sorenson seems like a good keeper. The ones at the bottom of the list would be Sooperkev, Dichio a Alex Rae.

Don't be daft Rik - the munchkin would walk into our side. I'd have Arca and Dirty Don too. Wouldn't touch any of the rest of them mind, bunch of dirty cloggers.

I would take Dyer and Solano from Newastle and that's about it. I rate Cort, but he is a long-term crock.

Can't believe you wouldn't take Sorensen for Given or Thome for O'Brien/Hughes.

What's your view on Shearer, should he hang up his boots and let NUFC plan for the future in the knowledge he can't play a full season any more?

Shearer rarely wastes a ball, something which cannot be said about virtually every other player in our side. If he cannot play a full season, I'll take what he can give. His goals almost single handedly got us to Wembley 3 years off the belt and kept us in the Premier league. He hasn't got the pace of Micheal Owen but he still has a lot to offer.

As long as we use Shearer sparingly like every other club should use their strikers we'll get goals out of him. Long gone are the days when one player should play all the matches in a season.

When fit Shearer is still on of the greatest threats in front of goal in the Premiership, trouble is he hasn't been fully fit for more than a year now.

Not only has he not been fit, but for ages now he's had to play anything but his natural game. It's no wonder he's looked little better than ordinary when he's spent 90 % of his time with his back to the opposition goal.

It's his finishing that's lethal, but only when it's instinctive. If he has to work his way into goal scoring positions with the ball, he'll fail most of the time.

I'd be prepared to stick with him provided that they've sorted the leg problems as well as they can, which we won't really know until next season and he's got a few real hard games under his belt.

And hopefully, there'll be somebody there to share the load - I mean even you'll admit, ML3, that SK hasn't been nearly as effective when Quinn's been missing.
