LOOK FOR TAX-REFUND CHECKS BY NEXT MONTH

By DEBORAH ORIN

June 4, 2001 -- WASHINGTON - The check is going in the mail fast - taxpayers could get their new $300 and $600 tax refunds from Uncle Sam as early as next month.

Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill said a letter will be sent out July 12 telling taxpayers when their check is coming and how big it will be.

"On the 20th of July, we'll send out the first 11 million checks, and then each week after that we'll send out another 11 million checks. And we'll finish up the last mailing on the 28th day of September," he told CNN.

The checks are $300 for singles, $500 for single parents and $600 for couples who had at least $6,000 in taxable income. Families that paid no taxes won't get refunds.

O'Neill added that folks who took the automatic extension and didn't file their returns on April 15 will have "a little delay" in getting the refunds that President Bush hopes will rev up the economy.

Bush has set Thursday to formally sign the tax cut, which was the centerpiece of his presidential campaign.

I suppose it's fantasy to suggest that all that money would be better spent funding exploration into alternative sources of energy.

I suppose everyone realizes that most of this 'bonus' will be spent in gas stations by people filling up their tanks at $2/gallon and maybe more. Nice for Big Oil -- bummer for the rest of us.
