Hi Gang. I'm not a lurker, but I haven't been here in quite a while so I'll let you know what I'm up to lately.

Around the holidays, I got a major "bug up my rear" about the fact that an uncle of mine took both of my grandma's treadle machines when she died, and refused to give one to my mother (like she wanted to have done before she died). So, I began a quest. The quest for a treadle sewing machine like grandma had.

This has been no easy task. I have been searching for most of this year, looking in antique stores, 2nd hand stores, thrift shops, ebay, and garage sales (that's tag sales for you back east).

I found the first one (!) by asking a lady working in an antique store. They didn't have one, and I was leaving my name and phone number for her to call me if and when one came in. She told me that she had one on her back porch, under a tarp and I could come see it. I bought it because it had my last name as the name of the machine, and it was in restorable condition. I finished restoring it to it's current beautiful condition, and have done most of a queen sized quilt on it already. It is a pleasure to use, and the sound of the treadle is soothing to my soul. Unfortunately this was not a Singer machine like grandma had, and besides, I would never sell this one because of the name of the machine.

I bought a couple machines off ebay, thinking that I could turn them into treadles, but still have been unable to find an appropriate cabinet in which to house them, so I am still looking for a cabinet.

This last weekend, I went to look at a machine that was priced right, but seemed to be rustier than I would normally accept. I went and "rescued" it from the store for a very reasonable price. It is (like my other one) about a hundred years old, and it shows her age, but the cabinet (a "coffin-top") is beautiful with real burled wood, and no rust on the iron base. I brought it home, and after drinking lots of oil, and cleaning with oil and q-tips, I tried it out. Wow! This machine is nearly silent, and smooth running. What a fine stitch it sews, and to think I rejected this one, cause it wasn't a singer.

Well, I called my mom last night, and told her I got this other machine, and that it wasn't a singer. She didn't care and she wants it, so I will pack it up and take it with me next time I go down to the farm. (I think it might be fun to have it down there if I want to sew something when I am down there).

Today, I received a Singer Redeye head from UPS. It is beautiful, and I remain on the prowl for a proper cabinet.

Meanwhile, the garden is growing well, the rasberries are doing great, and all the azaleas and rhodies are blooming their hearts out. I am doing battle with slugs and still battling headaches, but other than that, life is great.

Nice to be home again.....

OK, Bee, I confess, I'm a Lurker. In fact, remember the dogs rasin' cane last tuesday night outside your badroom window? Well, yeah, that was me. I used to lurk over to sis's house, but since she got that new sewin' machine, she's started wearin' clothes again (doggonit).

Old TimeBomb had a lurker, e i e i erk!

Sorry, just couldn't resist!

Yes, I lurk about once a week just to check to see who's doing what and what the FRL is doing (or undoing). Posting is really low on my priority list but I sure like to check in touch even if it is just by lurking.

So, hello, Aunt Bee, Tricia, Lon and Lon F, son of dust (our fearful leader), Gayla, and whoever else is out there. I hope you are all well.

And now back to erking! Linda (formerly known as "newbiebutnodummy")

Hi, I'm a lurker. I stop by and check the threads and never post. :-( Summer is here, the kids are out of school, I finally put the air conditioner on, my lawn is still not growing right despite my greatest efforts, and my dogs still dont understand a thing I say to them.

Here's what we have planned for the summer. A weekly trip to the racetrack..for some reason my kids love horseracing,..and all I have to do is place a $2 bet to show on each race. They win a whole .40c on a race and they're faces light up. Cheap fun for a few hours in the sun. They even have a secret method for picking horses, and damned if it doesn't work (once in awhile ;-)

Weekly trip to the baseball game...we have a new AAA team one town over, the BlueClaws, and the tickets are cheap and it's extreme fun to cheer for OUR team..and we pack sandwichs and suntan lotion and we're set for the day. Thank God they let you bring food in..it's the home of the $5 hotdog. Add to that our occasional jaunt to see the Phillies play in the evening..always worth the trip.

Wednesday is beach day because the beach is free that day and there are less tourists overall midweek. Part of the things memories are made of is the search for a parking space hour and the (it feels like) mile long walk to the boardwalk from the car dragging beach chairs, cooler and boogie board...and the SAND that follows us home and embeds itself in every inch of my house.

The rest of my time will be spent doing nothign, happily, as usual.

Nice to see everyone still posting. :-)

Lon! I know that song!

Old Stewball was a racehorse... and I wish he were mine.

He never drank water... he always drank wine.

Kritter, even when it comes to everyday life, you are a great storyteller! :-) You sound like a terrific mom... your kids are blessed.

-- Gayla (privacy@please.com), June 13, 2001.

Kritter, you have to PAY to go to the beach? I can't believe it! That is unreal!

-- sis (sis@home.zzz), June 13, 2001.

Hello to all! It's nice to see that I'm remembered!

Kritter-I'm envious that you have a yard! I have been looking out my window and seeing raw dirt for the past few weeks. Seems the dh decided that the drainage problem in the back yard necessitated ripping out a 40 year old pecan tree, scraping every last blade of grass from the yard and tearing out all the sidewalks. I have dirt and lots of it. I threatened to buy out all the green spray paint from the local Walmart and have a go at the yard with my spray can gun! DH was not amused.

Helen: Nice to see that my fella Okie is still doing okay. How's Gracie goat and her youngest?

Tricia: And my favorite Canuckian? Vous etes bien? (Please excuse the lack of accent.)

Lon: I'm thinking of visiting my Aunt Juanita in Louisiana. Seems like you and your evil twin hail from those parts? How's the weather? Soupy like gumbo yet?

Gayla: Care to share how your son is doing? I haven't seen news of him in awhile.

I'm proud (I think) to let ya'll know that I finally used the last quart of canned chicken from 1999. It was so good that I think I may can some more. It was tender, had lots of flavor, and was certainly easier to open up a jar. I still have plenty of rice and pasta, as well as pinto beans. (I teach private art lessons at home and used a bunch of rice by coloring it with food coloring and using it in mosaics!) Now if I could only think of something to make with those beans-besides gas, I mean!

Well, enough jawing, my beauty sleep is calling me and garage sales start early in the am. Better sign off. Good night, my friends. Linda

Tips on horses always welcome. My daughter picks based on the horses names...(if theres a color in it..like Blue Bird..or the word Princess, or any hint of a girl "name"..she picks it..and she also likes to be informed if a female jockey is in the race..Female jockeys are Aces with her. She hits it on the nose 80% of the time.

My son has some formula involving the horses home state ("mom..they didnt bring this horse all the way to NJ from Pensacola if they thought it was gonna lose") He rarely wins. :-(

The funniest thing is there are rarely kids at the track, even though they have family events there all the time.. so all these older peoples who are there all the time see these two kids and try to give them tips..and Jackie will nod and listen very seriously..it cracks me up. She's so into it. -----------------------------

I can't imagine a beach that you DONT have to pay for..is there such a place? It's $7.oo on the weekends, $4.5o during the week for adults, and half that for kids. On Wednesdays it's free because the good folks at Mastercard pay for that day..and you only have to be subjected to two or three annoying credit card sales people while you lie on the beach. BUT, If you sign up for one..at least they give you a free Beach ball..woot.

Hi Linda! Don't know if you saw this update or not:

"After being beaten up the second time, we were able to get Eric out of jail as third party custodians. They all said it couldn't be done, but God and a persistent mom are a pretty good team. :-) His court date is set for July 23rd. (They say this judge is a tough one... thanks for continuing to pray.)"

Thankfully we got him out before all of the flooding occurred. They had to move another 2900 men into that building from a different jail. The conditions became even worse, and we wouldn't have been able to see him for weeks. He starts a new job tomorrow and is excited about that. He thinks he would like to go into the Army if the court will allow it. It might be just what he needs. We haven't heard from anyone all week. The courts have been closed due to the flooding. Thanks for asking!

-- Gayla (privacy@please.com), June 14, 2001.

Linda, Grace Goat is very old and not doing so well after this last set of twins. She'll probably live, just not healthy looking right now.

Kritter, my kids want to petition the court to have custody transferred to you. We'll send child support. You'll need it. :)

Gayla, I don't suppose Eric's court records are lost forever? We were all praying he would get out of trouble, and you know we're odd anyway, and maybe our prayers were odd, and ...

Well, the Bible DOES say that God works in mysterious ways. ;-)

-- Gayla (privacy@please.com), June 14, 2001.

Wow, Aunt Bee, this thread was a great idea! It is sooo good to see all these folk again.

Linda - 2 posts! Wow! :-)

Gayla, I'm so glad to hear things are going well for your son. We'll keep on praying.

Kritter, sounds like you have a lovely summer lined up. Mine is gonna be a little less interesting... work, visit the in-laws, work, work....
