Have you ever done temp work?

Temp work is not fun.

Temp work? Temp work...don't you mean legalized slavery? I wasn't paid well, I was given away by some woman in a suit and a man who had too much gel in his hair and had a strange lemony smell.

I worked one day was off three, worked two days, off one. It was beginning to look like a common theme...well that and losing my file all the time. The best of templand came when they sent me twice for a job that wasn't even going yet! Hello, can you give me your job you idiot?

Then to top it off I was Given a small check that made the guy at the bank laugh so hard he asked, "job trouble?" with a all out buffaw coming out Oh hell no, not having an ounce of job trouble! Good thing I looked pitiful, the bank manager let me apply for a data entry job. Not sure I will ever do the temp thing again, I can't live on that kind of money.

No offense,

~Suz

I had always heard people rip on temp agencies/jobs but I decided to give it a shot anyway, I had nothing better going. I had a few offers but most of them were too far away for not enough money to make it worth my while. After about a month I ended up with an interview around the corner from where my fiancé works, doing customer service and such (mostly computer work) and got the job. A month and a half later they hired me, and I've been here ever since. And I was a Kelly Girl®.

Temp agencies wouldn't even hire me when I needed a job... Bastards...

LOL Mandy,

I was also this "Kelly" girl, I felt all fluffy and pink for about ten minutes. Our Kellyland is an alternate universe here... here's an example:

Me: "Hi, just calling to check in with you, I went for the job you sent me to and the manager said it isn't a position yet."

"Kelly" lady: "Wow, really? Who are you?"

M: " Uh, Suz ____, I have talked to you every day for a month now."

KL: "Oh let me get your file"

M: "OK"

she doesn't come back for SOME time...

KL: "Are you sure we sent you for that job?"

M: "Yes...I didn't know about it otherwise"

KL: "What are you smoking?"

I hung up...never went back...

I must be stupid. What the hell is a Kelly Girl®?

-- Anonymous, June 04, 2001

Jeremy: No temp agency would hire you? They "hire" practically anybody off the street -- if you can type, you're way ahead already. Now, getting them to give you actual jobs is another story.

Ive been stuck in temp jobs hell for the last year and a half. Ive only had one that didnt turn suckie.

A "Kelly" girl is a cute little term for someone that was an employee of Kelly Services. Someone would call for a Kelly girl (probably a secretary at that time) and they would send the best with a smile.

At least that is how the temp service told it to me, makes me wonder if they call the guys a "Kelly" boy?

Oh well, who believes all the shit they tell you?

Suz, Katie sure doesn't. :)

-- Anonymous, June 05, 2001

Yeah, no kidding.

-- Anonymous, June 05, 2001

Yes Unforunately

-- Anonymous, June 05, 2001

Katie, how the fuck do you live if you haven't worked since April? What the hell do you do all day?

-- Anonymous, June 05, 2001

Well, I get out of paying rent by sleeping with my roommate. I get out of paying the cable, water, phone and electric bills by having sex with guys from those companies. I'm fucking the Sprint PCS guy, too, so there goes the cell phone bill. Free gas, because I gave the Exxon CEO a killer blowjob once and now I have a free gas card for life. And groceries? Well, I don't eat much, so that helps, but when I do need food I just head over to the back office at Food Lion, do my thing, and then I get whatever I want in the store for free.

Does working at McDonalds for two hours, Blimpie for two months and KFC for two months count as "temp"....i mean they were really temporary!

I've had some SHIT JOBS!!!!!

Now I work at the Daily Press (newspaper), you know the one, the one Katie seemingly rips on occasion....
Just thought I'd add my anecdote.

Seriously Katie,

I was wondering the same exact thing. I have trouble paying my bills when I have a job, if I didn't have one for 6 weeks I'd probably have be barricaded in my room with collection agencies surrounding me.

-- Anonymous, June 05, 2001

Savings, basically -- what little I have. But if I don't get a job soon, I may HAVE to start fucking the utility guys. :)

-- Anonymous, June 05, 2001

Yes, I'm trying to be a temp right now. Key word there is "trying," obviously. They didn't get me a job when I had tons of free time, but of course they DID get me a job the day I actually needed some time to pack for going to Texas. When I get home, I'll probably be met with another two-week dry spell.

At least when I DO work, I get paid really well. Thirteen bucks an hour. It's hard to beat that. I'm thinking of signing up with some other agencies, though, just so I'll be working, you know, more than one day a month. AppleOne was one of my possibilities. I had no idea you could fill out the application online. I'll have to check that out.

Another cool thing about Appleone is that all of their jobs are posted on monster.com (and their website), so if you see something posted that you're interested in, you can call them and be like, "Hey. Hook me up." Unlike stupid Pro Temps, where you have no idea what the hell is going on.

-- Anonymous, June 06, 2001

Ooh, that IS cool. I'll definitely be checking them out when I get home. Then maybe I can snap up some more receptionist jobs (am I the only person who LOVES being a receptionist?).

-- Anonymous, June 06, 2001

They seem to be a little more concerned about actually getting you work, too. You know, since the entire purpose of an employment agency is to get you employment, whereas a temp agency could really care less whether you can pay the rent.

-- Anonymous, June 07, 2001

I tried working for Appleone. They never called me with any assignments. So then I tried Kelly Services. They had a job for me within an hour. But I think all temp jobs/agencies are crapy no matter what.

-- Anonymous, June 09, 2001

Try Adecco, if there's an office near you. I'm in Maryland, and they have them here, at any rate. Anyway, I did the interview and tests thing, and that same afternoon they called saying they had a temp job for me for the whole summer, data entry, $10 an hour. All the other agencies I applied to never called me once, the bastards.
