Elmarit 24 mm viewfinder problem

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

My first try seemed to diappear so I try again. Here it is: My vewfinder attached to the accessory shoe points left 2-3 degrees so if it is not the viewfinder itself it must be the accessory shoe that points in that direction. Is there an easy way to adjust it? Is it the little screw at the front of shoe or do I have to go inside the camera. I am a little bit scared to do something that may damage it so please help! /Lars

Give it a stiff twist in the direction you want it to point and see if that helps. WAIT! Did I say that? Nope, you didn't hear it from me, if something breaks. I'd try that first, myself, though.

If you want to dig a bit, after you remove the little screw at the front of the shoe you can slide the springed floor of the shoe out the back, with a little messing around (it's got got some fingers at the front that it holds on with that you'll have to lift a bit). And then you see the four screws that hold the shoe down, and you can mess around there.

But I doubt that's the problem. Are you absolutely sure that the finder isn't seeing what the camera is?????

Lars, Having just looked at the shoe on 4 Ms I think it is impossible for the show to be out of alignment because it is such a close fit.

I would not suspect the camera shoe. The pedestal on the viewfinder is tacked onto the finder either with heat or adhesive--I can't figure out which, but they do break off and it's obvious it's not a one-piece-molded affair. So it is possible the pedestal on your finder was attached slightly askew. You might try mounting it on another camera hot shoe, to check. Since Leica does fix these finders when they break, they might be able to straighten it out.

Ok, thank you for your answers so far. I also think it's not the hot shoe but the viewfinder so i will try to live with it. This piece of plastic may have been manufactured with some pedestal error. But if I do not attach the viewfinder right at the "bottom" then I can align it with the front of the camera body and lock it. It is when I push it the last 2-3 millimeters to the "bottom" of the shoe that it goes out of direction. Also I have the possibility to attach it to my old M4 which is now in for service. I will compare later. Thank you again! /Lars

Then just trim the front of the shoe square with a file.

Hmmm, I meant the front of the foot on the finder!
