capturing with ati's AIW card

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I recently bought an ATI All-In-Wonder 128 Pro video capture card. The problem I'm having is that the capturing from an analog source doesn't seem to work. When I run software like Adobe Premiere to capture, it says there's no signal or unable to open port, something like that. None of the software I tried it on works. I went to the Control Panel, under Multimedia and then the Video tab. Under the category of "Video capturing devices", should there be anything listed? Because there isn't anything there in mine, which I don't think is correct. Anyone who has the same video card and has this working well give me some suggestions. Thanks.

Steven, I used to have an ATI AllInWPro 8mb AGP2x card, and i can tell you from experience that its best to use ATI's own software for video capture. Connect the ATI fly lead to the input socket on your card and then connect the composite plugs to your vcr via a scart lead.

You MUST make an audio connection from the ATI card to your sound card, read the manual for this. I use to connect to the AUX input on my SBLive card and tehn unticked the MUTE box in VOLUME CONTROL.

Finally, choose the ATIVCR2.DLL for capture and select composite SOURCE (in ATI VIDEO SOFTWARE) and select a resolution like 352*288 and set the audio to 44khz 16bit stereo.

With these settings you can capture for 72 mins in one go (remember - the 2gb file size limit for AVI's).

Hope this helps,

Andy.

Hi, There's a vast difference between the AIW Pro and the AIW 128 Pro. The 128 has the Rage video and other differences in addition to having either 16 or 32 Mb video RAM.

There IS a problem with the current (MMC 7.1) version of the ATI MMC. When trying to use the external dongle (the purple external input box) the sound from that will NOT be available. There is something wrong with the ATI's internal mixing when using it with an external source. There is a way to "get around" the problem. It's a bit of a pain .. but it will allow you to capture from external source WITH audio. When using the built in TV tuner there is no problem. This mostly affects the real time Mpeg capture. Not sure about AVI capture ... If you want to get audio from your external source you must run the audio feeds directly to the sound card input instead of using that ATI dongle. Leave the Composite or S-Video source on the dongle, but run the audio to the sound card. You'll want to mute the TV audio or it will mix with your input source. Then you can play with your sound mixer and get the external source activated. Good luck ..

OK, you know the premiere and similar packages just sucks on mpg based capture cards, i begin capturing with premiere and tells me this " a lot of resolutions but just one pixel depth" maybe the videos captured in avi looks good playing but when you try too edit them looks like sh$#, my best tip for this is donīt use the premiere for capture with this card or similar packages because this works with the system setup and the ati multimedia center and videostudio works with the card setup , and best capture in mpg because if you capture in avi the videos are bad looking and heavy in mpg are more little and more good quality because you just can capture 16 bit depth in avi in aiw but 24 bit real color without that bad looking fields in mpg capture from videostudio or ati multimedia start center under digital vcr settings in mp2 (mpg2) of corse the settings can be change and if you want to edit the videos in mpg but you donīt have one package for this download the mpg2avi "FlasKMPEG" in www.vcdhelp.com and voila ps: the flaskmpeg works better with videos in mpeg1 or mpeg2 captured from the ati multimedia center BYE MEN AND GOOD LOOK Julio Bahamonde Candia Cg designer and animator SEBASTIA@TELSUR.CL
