Well done, Wozza!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Nice story in the Consett and Stanley Advertiser about Wozza meeting loads of bairns from the Sandhole Community Centre in Stanley and raising money at an event at the working men's club for 6 local bairns' teams. Nice photo of Wozza with loads of bairns in their Toon tops. Nice to see footballers taking their role in the community seriously.

altogether positive

I find it altogether humourous that no one has replied to this, maybe the total loathing of him on the pitch exceeds any brilliance the man does as a rep for the club ... off it.

It's always good to hear positive PR about players making an effort to better the community the play for. However, is it possible that the apathy to this thread is more the thought "shouldn't they do that anyway" than any anti-Barton feelings?

The club should seriously be evaluating Barton for a career with the Toon after his playing days are done. (I realise one or two of you will replace the word "after" with "now that".)

He has all the right attributes, loves the club, the fans, the region, and plays with the heart of a lion. Judging by this story from the renowned (in Consett & Stanley) "Consett and Stanley Advertiser", he has all the right PR as well. As for any credentials he might possess as a coach, manager, etc that would remain to be seen but that is what the board and YBR should be looking at. Promotion from within would be good for continuity at the club and I can't think of anyone I'd rather have as a manager provided he has the necessary coaching and management ability.

I'm fairly sure that a year or two ago Warren Barton put his name on a football coaching school. We were sent details and the prices to go on Warren Bartons football coaching coarse was astronomical.

I may be naive, but the players should be doing this all the time, and I think lots of them do, it just doesn't always get the nationwide coverage that the C&SA has given it this time.

Barton is excellent with the fans, he does applaud us, he does appreciate us, no one ever ever doubts that side of him. Doesn't make him a good footballer, just a nice guy.

Agree with ya, Jonno. I've long felt Barton should be groomed for a coaching/managerial role with the club as his playing days wind down. I think he'll do well wherever he winds up because he's been working to gain experience and badges for a long time without alot of fanfare. He's doing it because he wants to, not for recognition. I just hope the club find a spot for him on our coaching staff.

Most players do this thing quite often.

There are always photos of players visiting kids in hospitals and the like. Still good to hear about, Warren is one of those that you'd expect to be doing the good PR work.

A NICE RICH GUY, more like it.

It's in their contracts that they will do a certain amount of community work. However, the Wozza stuff is out of season and al most certainly not required by his contract. It was that that impressed me. After all, there was no sign of the similarly leisured Kieron Dyer or Alan Shearer. Then again, they are decent footballers so it doesn't matter.

But if Shearer seriously wants to get in to management, it does matter in a way. How many top managers/coaches show up at the 'office' for 2hrs a day then go home, or off to the golf course, off to do endorsements and interviews, etc? It seems that the really successful ones work day and night and show a real passion for the game. At this stage, it would seem like Shearer should be getting involved in some of these other activities and taking courses. If he really is hungry for it, it would be natural. Though it could also be that Bobby's got him working on his powers of persuasion to try to convince players to sign for us this summer. Also good for his development. ;-)

I agree 100% Ciara.

-- Anonymous, June 03, 2001

Next thing you'll be asking why Shearer wasn't sitting with Bobby in the dugout during his convalescence or why he didn't do his gym workouts in the evenings and actually stand with Bobby and Wadsworth during the training sessions instead of being off on his tod. Sheesh, what do you expect from someone who only gets £40k a week and aspires to being a manager some day? Give the poor guy a break.

I'd love to see Wozza get what he truly deserves.......a sell-out testimonial and a place in management. He has served us well.

Softie, you're forgetting the fact that he is a Freeman of the City, too..... An arduous job if ever there was one..

-- Anonymous, June 03, 2001

Apologies Softie, guess I was being a bit unreasonable. :-)
