Read Poe's own description in his "The Philosophy of Composition". It is online at www.eapoe.org in his essays. The story itself is rather straightforward and self-explanatory. He's bouncing his grief and fears off a talking bird until it becomes a full-fledged haunting that will never stop oppressing his soul.
