Scapulars

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Catholic : One Thread

Not long ago I heard that the Pope was planning on writting about the Scapular. I have done some searching but so far have found nothing. If anyone has any information on this, I would greatly appreciate hearing for you. Thanks.

I was taught during confirmation that if one were wearing the Scapular in good faith during their time of death, they are guaranteed into heaven (whether that means purgatory first or just straight to heaven I don't know).

Does someone have info on this? If one has good faith without the Scapular I would assume that they would get into heaven anyway, but what makes the Scapular so special as to guarantee this entrance?

Thanks.

In Christ.

Jake,

What scapular are you talking about? The Church has approved 18 different scapulars.

I think you might be talking about the brown scapular. But it is not as cut and dry as you think. ;-) I do wear a brown scapular medal. Is that the scapular you are talking about that you learned about at you're Confirmation class?

God bless you

18 different Scapulars? I never knew that. Thanks for the info. I think it was the brown one. Maybe another forumite will know something.

Hello, Jacob

"But what makes the scapular so special as to guarentee this entrance?"

The Church does NOT teach that wearing a scapular is some sure ticket to Heaven, rather, We must strive to be in a State of Grace, implore our Lords forgivness, and trust in the material aid of our Blessed Mother.

I know you have mentioned that you read about one or two holy Saints everynight, Jake. If you get a chance read about St Simon Stock. This is the Saint that the Blessed Mother appeared to at Cambridge England on Sat, July 16, 1251 and made the promises to of those who die wearing the brown scapular.

If you are going to wear one, you must get enrolled to.

God bless you

David

Thank you, David.

I know what you said is true. "We must strive to be in a State of Grace, implore our Lords forgivness, and trust in the material aid of our Blessed Mother." That is what I believed from the outset. But all else equal, what advantage does the one wearing the Scapular have? I think that since the Scapular is a reminder - and so being constantly reminded of the "oath" that person took - that the person wearing it would have the advantage of this. And that so being reminded the person would be guaranteed to follow their oath. I think this is the case. Would you agree?

Thanks again.

In Christ.

Hello, Jake

I agree with a lot of what you said.

"....And that so buy reminded the person would be guaranteed to follow their oath"

I don't believe that they would be guaranteed though. I do wear a brown scapular, and I find my self in Confession more than most, I would imagine. There are indulgences in kissing the brown scapular to Jake. I think that by wearing one you are thinking of the Blessed Mother constantly, and in return, She will be thinking of whoever wears one faithfully.

God bless you

David
