Any Changes In Noctilux

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

I'm new to the world of Leica M, but what I've read so far seems to indicate that the optical formula of the f/1 Noctilux hasn't changed since its introduction (only cosmetics, lens hoods, & such). Is this true or has the optical formula been tweaked over the years? Thanks in advance, Chris

Optical design is the same for all the f/1 versions.

The very earliest mount design takes a E58 filter and was soon changed to a take a E60 filter. The Noctilux has some designed in mechanical vignetting to control abberations wide open but perhaps they found the E58 was a bit too much (warning idle speculation alert). Anyway I would get an E60 version, which the vast majority of them are...

Cheers,

The Noctilux has only one formula, from Dr. Walter Mandler of Wild Leitz Canada in Midland Ontario, Canada (Elcan )

There are varios versions, some with build in hood, some with detachable hood.

Noctilux was made in Canada up to 1997. After General Motor/Hughes sold Elcan to Raytheon in 1998, production of Noctilux moved to Germany.
