Sites Protect Against Involuntary Collection Of Personal Information

WASHINGTON, 5:20 p.m. EDT May 25, 2001 -- It's like a one-stop center to protect your privacy on the Internet.

The advertising industry has set up a pair of Web sites that let computer users refuse to have their personal data collected and profiled when they visit popular commercial sites on the World Wide Web.

Until the sites were set up, you would have to visit each Web site individually -- and "opt out" of being profiled.

The sites are in response to critics and some lawmakers who have complained about the practice of having sites collect information about where people surf on the Net -- and use that to find out what products might interest a particular computer user.
