Newcastle's Defence

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Just been reading Bereford's comments in the Chronicle about the Newcastle Defence and that it is in pretty much good shape if everyone stays fit. This seems to go against the general concensus on here. I agree with his comments that O'brien seems to be a great signing (based on what Ive seen and heard)and that Dabs has provided the bit of steel we needed (although Im still unsure about him) I still think we need 2 good full backs (someone to cover for griffin when injured and someone on the left, as Quinn is a squad player if that). What does everyone else think?? AM.

To be honest I think we need 5 players. A left back, a centre half (with ba!!s of steel), a left winger/midfielder, a creative midfielder and a super quick centre forward.

I agree that Quinn is a squad player and I don't think that Elliot is the answer. I think we are covered at right back with Barton, Griffin and to a lesser extent Hughes.

We are too quick to blame Quinn. Ok he has shown lapses like Carteron's goal in the derby but without a left winger to track Carteron he would be exposed.

He has the basic attibutes to become a good Premiership player and once, like the rest of them, he starts playing in a consistent team we should judge him.

You may be righ DB, it would be interesting to see him play when he has a left midfielder/winger infront of him.

If he was really top class, which is what I'd prefer, then he would be able to cope those times he is left exposed

Really top class is not within our budget and like it or not we need to make do. Given the amount of money probably sanctioned for this transfer I fail to see how Robson could have done any better, without going abroad and signing another South American.

Bez couldn't get in the England side but seemed to cope pretty well with Ginola ahead of him and the frequent wanderings of The Prince. You don't have to be World Class, you just have to make it personal.
