greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

I have just received instructions on how to change the name of this board to something to rememebr Ken by.

Basically it involves setting up a new name and then I contact the system admin guy who copies everythin we have into the new shell.

Two questions Do we want to do this ? What do we call the new one ?

yes, definitely, and 'The In The Know Newcastle United BBS' sounds great!

Sounds like a great idea!

And I agree with swift about the new name too.

I'll go along with that.....

I don't want to be a party-pooper nor disrespectful to the memory of Ken, but will we arrive at a de-facto policy of changing the name of this bbs each time one of our number dies? Or just the top posters? First three? Or six?

Given the age profile (see current thread "Where are you from") of some of the contributors (not to mention the exciting lifestyle of some others) we could be set for permanent change.

The same thought briefly occurred to me so don't worry about being a party pooper, I guess this will be the one and only change....

Not trying to cause a problem, but would Ken really want that? What happens if another regular passes on, do we change the name again? Ihave two suggestions, create a permanent category called "TRIBUTE" put all postings/threds in this category and people can go and add things on, and their dream lives on.

Secondly I suggest we retire the handle ITK and likewise do the same for anyone else who is a regular here.

Renaming the thread is ok, but I feel, Ken would feel it is a bit over the top.

fair point

I think it is a great idea to rename this forum. Lets face it, the Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS isn't the most inspiring (even if it does describe this place pretty well! Sorry Dunx. Even without the association to Ken, In the Know is a great name for a BBS - after all, there's always somebody in the know on most subjects discussed and it certainly beats Ready to go as a name.

I wouldn't expect the name to be changed again in future in memory of somebody else. I see this as a one-off to mark the passing of Ken.

My sentiments echo Screachers. This is a one off and it's a better name anyway.

The use of "In The Know" in the BBS name is really good. Those of us who knew him will recognise the association, to newcomers it just seems like a normal name.

I reckon it shouldn't be changed again and I, Jonno, being of sound mind and body (seek a 2nd opinion Jonno - Ed) do hereby, inasmuch as this and notwithstanding that and being fully cognisant hereinafter of the other, decree that in the event of my demise (how would we be able to tell? -Ed) that I shall not take it as an affront to my memory if the board name is not changed in my honour. Of course, this situation is unlikely to arise as my ambition is to become the oldest man in the World (Can't be far off that now then - Ed).

The idea isn't so much what the name of the BBS is, it's ensuring people know and understand what it's about. I disagree with renaming this BBS for the sake of renaming it, and I certainly feel the best way to honour someones memory is by carrying on the name....

We would die if they wanted to change the name of Newcastle United Football Club to something more snazzy like Newcastle Flying High Magpies, or whatever.

Tradition is what counts, I'm sure Ken would agree.

I like the idea of renaming it. In this case because the new name does have a meaning on it's own for newbies, and special connotation to the rest of us.

Also think there's something to the idea of a 'tribute' or 'history' category. It's also a good way for newbies to get some feel for folks and events unique to the bbs that we'll undoubtedly mention from time to time.

My vote is for changing the name, as suggested.
It is entirely a one-off event in tribute to man who was synonomous with everything this bbs represents.
Let's not analyse it to death, and risk devaluing what is simply a nice spontaneous idea.

Just a small point I want to make, then I'll be quiet :-)

Can everyone please stop saying "it's what he would have wanted". I know I'm as guilty as others of saying it but it seems to drifting into discussions alot more. This is not a personal point, but a general criticism.

As relatively few BBSers actually knew Ken face to face and far fewer can say they were life long bosom buddies (I cannot lay claim to that fact) can anyone really and honestly second guess our friend's opinion on this matter?

The name of this "virtual pub" doesn't matter to me. I'd have renamed it 'The Greenspun Arms'. As a memory to the first member of this community who has passed away I would agree to the renaming, and as young Screach mentions the current name is pretty bland (though it was the name of the original Communicata bbs).

We've had marriages and births but to my knowledge this is our first death. Let's rename the bbs and be done. Not just for Ken but it is an event of some significance in any community.
