Magpies closing in on Emerton Newcastle are reportedly in pole position to land Feyenoord's Australian international Brett Emerton. The Magpies are one of a clutch of top English clubs tracking the 22-year-old midfielder, but seemed likely to lose out to Treble-winning Liverpool when it came to persuading the player to quit Holland for the Premiership. However, reports from Rotterdam now suggest that Emerton's preferred English club is Newcastle after a bizarre recommendation from team-mate Jon Dahl Tomasson. A Dutch source confirmed: "Of the managers that have shown an interest in the player, Bobby Robson is in the best position to sign him." Meanwhile, Danish striker Tomasson is understood to have extolled the virtues of life on Tyneside to Emerton - a little surprising as Tomasson endured a miserable spell there during Kenny Dalglish's reign at St James' Park. Emerton is also said to have been influenced by the fact that Robson is still the most revered English coach in Holland after two successful stints in charge at PSV Eindhoven. Emerton, who has won 15 full caps for Australia and scored against Scotland last November, is currently away in Japan and South Korea playing in the Confederations Cup, which starts tomorrow. But the fact remains that Emerton has only very recently insisted he wants to stay at Feyenoord for at least another season. So whether Newcastle and his other English suitors - which also include United's North-East rivals Middlesbrough - will have to wait 12 months before thinking about landing the dynamic playmaker remains to be seen.

Any reports on him Tre? What sort of player is he, attacking? defensive?

This would match up with a slightly hard of hearing report in the People last week saying we were after Emerson

i saw that and winced

So long as Lake and Palmer don't turn up as well...

-- Anonymous, May 29, 2001

Paul Lake and Carlton Palmer? At least Paul Lake would settle straight in...

Rikki Lake and Arnold Palmer ?

gen... Brett Emerton is a right sided midfielder who's your typical Aussie. Committed and athletic. Apparently a canny player but not one to build the team around...yet. Basically 22 years old and raw. But i'll hold on until the man Stevo takes the saddle...He might be the man to add some character to the team, what about Tiatto while we are at it?

-- Anonymous, May 29, 2001

Read he was a right winger. Maybe he also can play in the middle.

-- Anonymous, May 29, 2001

I thought Tiatto would be taking some time out to devote to his new acting career with a starring role in Lord of the Rings?

What's surprising about that? You can imagine the spiel can't you? "Yeah - go to Newcastle mate, I was on £20k a week and didn't have to do anything for it". :-)

Aye Jonno, and it wasn't only JDT who endureda miserable spell at SJP during KD's reign. I reckon by the last count there were about 36,000 others, not to mention those who couldn't get it.

"Emmo" as they call him here in the media!, is a 22yo right sided "winger" (I am not sure as to what they mean by winger) he normally plays as a true right sided midfielder or as an attacking player wide on the right.

His main asset is speed and ball control.

His two main assets are speed and ball control and strength.

Amongst his main assets are speed, ball control, strength and passing ability. I would see him as a central Harry Kewell rather than a Dyer Solano type wide man.

Like all Aussie players, will run all day and give 100%. (I do not believe it is possible to give 110%)

He will tackle, jump and chase down players. He was the Olympic team captain in 2000, is about 22, 85kgs and 185cm tall. I think he is a better bet than Lee Clark long and short term, for the same money.

Is currently in Korea for the Confederations cup with the Aussie side.

Not much more to say other than what is spread around here. If he signs he will increase the number of female ST holders as well! (Accordion to Mrs gus that is)

Seems like a decent prospect and one who could do well in the Premiership as he has the physical attibutes which are so important in the English game. Most Aussies seem well suited to the Premiership.

Shame he isn't a left midfielder.

Wahey! It's important that we keep our high ratio of lookers in the team. ;-)))

Yes, and it is clearly an extremely high priority to increase the number of right wingers we have in order to reinforce our revolutionary "lop-sided right" formation - the natural successor in world soccer to the "diamond" and "Xmas tree" formations.
After all, what on earth would we do if Solano, Dyer and Gavilan all got injured?

Move Warren Barton forward and play Griffin/Hughes at RB. See, there is a good reason for buying him ;-)

Brett Emerton, Bankstown (Aus), 22 Februari 1979

Career: 1994-1997 Australia Institute of Sport 1997-00 Sydney Olympic 52 matches 10 goals 2000-2001 Feyenoord 28 matches 2 goals

Arrived at Feyenoord touted as a right-sided attacking midfield player, but in his first season he has mostly been used as right- back, (all-be-it one that likes to get forward a lot). That his idol is Ryan Giggs speaks for itself. He has never hidden the fact his aim is to play in England. The UK work-permit law that insists on 75% of internationals over 2 years has been embedded in his head since he was 15 apparently. I can't find fault with Gus's discription from the little I've seen in his first year in Holland: pacey, a good engine, skilfull. A product of the Australia Institute of Sport he comes across, as one might imagine, as very driven, ultra- professional, and very calm. He scored a sensational goal this season, dribbling from the half-way line, and yet hardly celebrated it. His one red-card, in an international game, still troubles him. His coach, Bert van Marwijk, described him as 'a type that prefers action to talk' (looses something in translation but you get the drift). Feyenoord, owned by meglamaniac roofing contracter, would probably jump at the chance of a quick profit and would sell.

Reservations: Assuming he could get a work-permit international duty would mean regular absences. Would we want him as a defender or a midfielder? he's acquited himself admirably in both roles for Feyenoord but defending in the Dutch competition is not as demanding as the EPL. Dutch clubs believe all English clubs are loaded, and as Arsenal are discovering with Dudek (and us with Sikora?) this can lead to unrealistic prices being slapped on players. BTW Jon Dahl Tommason's recommendation of life in Newcastle doesn't suprise me as he's always been very positive about the club, the fans, and the area.

90 mins against Scotland, best player on the park, repeat Get Brett

-- Anonymous, May 29, 2001

I do not think there will be a problem re Internationals. OZ tend to play most of them in the European off season other than World Cup games.

A few are also played in Europe as the competition is a little thin over this way.

Ciara, I take no blame if he is not all that nice, Mrs gus has strange taste in men!

-- Anonymous, May 29, 2001

Oh...he's quite nice actually. At least judging by the photo in the Ronnie. Sign him! Mrs Gus obviously has good taste. :-)

-- Anonymous, May 29, 2001

As many have said, he's basically a right winger, who likes setting his team mates up. A right sided Harry Kewell is a very apt description. As MacB. said he absolutely destroyed Scotland and Dominic Matteo. Fergusson has been after him for some time, but Emerton has no time for Manu.

could be a replacement for solano who says he would 'swim or walk' to Real Madrid this summer :-(

-- Anonymous, May 30, 2001

Hasta la vista, Nobs - you spineless toerag.
I've got to admit, I'll be quite contented when this guy finally goes.

-- Anonymous, May 30, 2001

Besides we don't need a relacement for Solano if he goes. Play Dyer on the right wing, Carrick and Bassedas/Speed in the middle and the new fella on the left.

A balanced midfield which has plenty of energy (okay maybe not Speed)!!
